I hate stink bait!

…but there are times when it works too well to just ignore it.
For numbers of fish, it simply can not be beat.

My problem is not the smell, but the rerigging. Taking off the Double Action hooks and threading the tube, then tying on the treble hook is bad enough, but then if I want to change back to cut bait or even 4 or 5 fatheads I have to retie again. Ever notice the treble hooks that come with many tube baits get bent easy? No, another set of rods in the boat is not an option!

One of the guides we used down on Texoma had this simple but effective set up for using Secret Seven dip bait.

Leave the circle hook on your line, cut the tube in half and place the circle through the tube as shown in the photo.

Want to switch back to cut bait? Take off the tube and your ready to go. I leave the tubes in the Secret Seven so I know where they are when I need them next time.

Taking kids fishing? Don’t forget the dip bait!

YOU put your finger in a channel cats mouth!

    I’ll watch.

But you did make a good point. There are some… that don’t like handling cats because of the slime. Those fish grips come in handy for most smaller fish. Larger fish like Sturgeon and Flathead should support them in the middle to keep the weight off their back bones ect.

Hey BK. I usually just slip the tube over a #4 Gamakatsu Octopus and then just slide it off when I want to switch back to cutbait. I like your tip as well!

You are right about the stink bait producing though. It outperforms just about everything this time of year.

I might try some for fun sometime, so what is the recommended dip bait by Ido users?

Last summer was the first time I’ve used the sonny’s and that stuff can’t be beat for channels in august!

    Hey Brian,

I have a solution for your switching rigs around but it will cost you. Why use expensive stink bait when the cheap stuff works better than fine? I’ve never caught numbers of fish on stink bait.

I have a jar of sunny anda small tub of secrete seven. So I’m trying both too. Sonny’s on the ladies rig, and secrete 7 on mine.

This stuff isn’t just for fishin. The best use of it that I have heard of is rubbing a bit of it under the door handles of someone you don’t like.

My experience with the stuff was 10″ fish sucking that little treble hook down into their stomach.

If that’s the case…move. Your in a school of young of the year. Generally this will happen in Aug/Sept….and that’s another reason I don’t like them trebles!

Big pet peeve of mine. A fish hatched earlier in the year won’t be 10″ at that time. I know I am splitting hairs, but I have had people catch a 5″-10″ cat in July and say that it was this years hatchlings and I just roll my eyes. I don’t know the exact growth rate, but 10″ would most likely be 2+ years old.

    Pointless rant over. Please continue.

Meh, I know what you meant in the context of your reply, whether they are 1 year old 2 year old doesn’t matter. That just shows you how much of a peeve it is, I can’t keep quiet about it. I wasn’t trying to correct you, as much as I was getting it off my chest.

For channel cats, dip bait has been very very good to me.

I prefer the single hooks, if I had trebles I remove a tine anyhow. In current, I prefer a dip worm. In ponds, the tube. And, they work below a slip float too…

Thanks Pug…you got me to do a little digging. Most articles on channels talking about farm-raised catfish, refer to a weight of 11/4 pounds at an age of about 18 months. They are very temperature dependent on growth.

    Pretty interesting stuff.

About how many inches would that be? Just because it is a pet peeve of mine, doesn’t mean I am right. 1.25 lbs has to be at least 12-15″? These numbers were pulled out of my rear. Oh look. A set of car keys I lost.

    Lookin good Brian K!

There is a new video at Team Catfish thats all about fishing with the secret 7 in current and flodded conditions. You are on the right track when you cut up your dip tubes. I use 2 chunks on the 3/0 and 3 chunks on the 5/0 DOUBLE ACTION hooks.

I was doing another video today and caught blues up to 10 lbs on the 7 and channels up to 5 lbs. All caught on S7 and D.A. hooks in fast current……

A young of year channel cat in July would probably be under an inch. What that has to do with stink bait, not quite sure…

Gamakatso makes a treble with a one hook as a kahle type hook this will minimize them gutting it I have used sonny’s and hit numbers of them up to 7 lbs only
