Sturgeon Bait – not crawlers

I am planning on bringing a few alternate baits to the Sturgeon Excursion to try out some new things.

My biggest Sturgeon (for a few weeks anyways ) was caught on a ringworm tipped with a minnow, but I want to expand my horizons a little. Here is what I am bringing, but let me know any others worthy of a try.

    1. Crawlers, the old standby
    2. Minnows, I want to get some cut shad, or something else greasy, but need to know who carries them?
    3. Sturgeon Candy that I have to order online from the west coast.
    4. Anything else?

    I love that pic

The only thing greasy in our group will be Kooty

    Cut sucker? Gulp!?

What type of gulp do you think would work? I hae never used it for anything before.

A face only a mother could love. You decide if its the fish or the angler.

I don’t know. I seem to remember a show a year or two ago where they were fishing the Rainy for sturgeon using one real crawler and one GULP! crawler on a hook for extra scent. Come to think of it, I think CatdadMN may have been on the show.

Is it legal to cut one of the gazillion suckers we catch?

And yes, I’m the greazzy one. Zillman is too old to get greazzy anymore.

66.5 with a girth that I have never seen before, but I did not have a soft tape to get a measurement. I would love to have it back to get better measurements.

That big sturgeon AquaJo caught last year had me on length, but I don’t think the girth was the even close. I could not get my arms around the pig, and she did not fit on my livewell cover for a proper measurement. It was summer, and I had chased it with walleye gear for a long time and I wanted to get her back home. I was not prepared for her at the time. I guess walleye fishing will do that to you.

The only fish I saw that rivaled her on girth was a picture I saw at the bait shop up there of a 72″ PIG.

    Dang, I am getting excited

Too bad Kooty is going this year, we will not have any fun with him there

I know were talkin a whole different game here, but I know the folks on the west coast use spawn sacks for those big whites… Who knows, maybe it could work.

Great looking fish, quite a monster. I was wondering do any of you guys use WD-40. We used it last year and we ran exactly 50-50 on rods with it and without it.

I was just going to post WD-40 even thought it’s secret!

The spawn sacs might work…as long as they aren’t Pugs!

Insect larva (midges), mussels, crayfish, freshwater shrimp. Although, I advise you NOT to bring zebra mussels or rusty crayfish for bait.

Hopefully I can get up there in the next few days or weeks – crawlers and cutbait will be bait of choice!

Last year (for me) good old fashioned fatheads outfished everything. The bigger fish seemed to prefer them too. I liked to have 1 or 2 wigglers mixed with half a dozen pinched off.

And much the same could be said for my night crawler.

Cub Foods – especially the more urban locations usually have Buffalo (fish) filets in the meat dept. I’ve used this for Channels with success probably because it cuts up well into chunks, stays on the hook like crazy and I’m guessing they like it ‘cuz Buffalo would be “native flesh” for the fish that like cut bait here. Easy to have on-hand in the freezer too in case you don’t have fresh!

Buffalo as cut bait, hmm. Well since you had luck, I wouldn’t mind trying it, however could someone clarify if that is legal? Not trying to get you in trouble as much as I am trying to keep myself out of it.
