Sturgeon – What hooks to use?

Last year we used 3/0 circles and didn’t have much problem but I recall some people using much bigger hooks. What kinds of hooks are you using and why do you use a bigger hook, for more bait? Do you use the thin wire style like the Gamagatsu’s or the thick style like the Mustads?

i think 3/0 or 4/0 is just the right size but i dont think sturgeon are at all hook shy. last fall on the croix i used a size 1 for most of the season because i had run out of everything else and they still worked with a big hunk of meat. havent tried anything besides gamakatsu hooks.

I usually use 2/0 to 5/0 Gamakatsu circle. 3/0 is a great size. I picked up some 3/0 Team Catfish circles that I will be trying this year, as well.

I’ve gone to using the 3/0 gammies.

This year I’ll be using the 3/0 Team Catfish Double Action hooks along with the gamies for comparison.

Reason I’m trying something that’s new? Because I’ve been told by a number of users that the Double Action hooks by Team Catfish can be used like a J hook or a circle. In other words I can let the fish hook it self or set the hook home which ever I prefer at the time.

I’m hoping the test will be this Friday.

2/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks have always done well for us.
