I have access to a farm pond with small bullheads. I thought I saw someone mention bullhead trap. The last time I used them the mosquitos ate me alive while I used a ice fishing rig with red worms to get a few. Need a trap. How do you guys hook’m and what size circle hook? Thanks for your time.

If you are looking to build a trap, you can build one much like a crayfish trap that I have. Should work along the same principal. Mine is about 2.5′ square and about 1′ deep fencing (mesh) material with a few indentations along the sides (the 1′ part) with 2″ PVC leading in. Once they swim in, they have a hard time swimming out.

Just make sure to check the regs for minnow traps where you plan to use it.

    Best of luck!

I use your standard cylindrical fish trap that you can buy at Walmart or Gander Mountain for bullheads. They work fine – I enlarge the opening to 1 1/2 inches which is the maximum size allowed on traps. Read page 70 of the 2009 Minnesota Fishing Regulations for trap requirements. You can bait your traps with just about anything: saltine crackers, dog or cat food or just put out the trap empty. Last year I was catching some fathead minnows in the trap and those minnows lured in the bullheads. I think the fatheads responded to the bait and then the bullheads responded to the fatheads. The bullies threw up minnows for a couple of days after I had them in the quarantine tank.

thye make one at fleet farm that is square and bullies fit fit into that one you just have to look at each opening because they are not finished off with a ring so they vary in size
