Brians post got me thinking, and I try to be at least slightly prepared for everything, so what is the best, or at least a decent scale for larger fish? 50 lb minimum, but going up towards 80-100 lbs.

I have been thinking that I might like to throw a few LOTW sturgeon on the scale as well during the sturgeon excursion.

I bought a digital bow scale at Cabela’s a few years ago that is good for up to 110 lbs. It fits in my cat box and is always ready for that really big fish. I went looking for it on the Cabela’s website but they don’t seem to have it anymore. I did a google search and found one that looks just like it called a Martin digital Bow Scale for $60 and it weighs up to 110#.

Hey Farmboy – One more thing you want to think about is a net that you can place the fish in to hang on your scale. I bought a replacement landing net (just the net – not the frame) and it was only like $15 and it doesn’t take up any room. I bought a big salmon net (36″ W 42″ or so, it’s huge) I stuffed it in a camping sack and keep it in the boat storage for just that giant fish I may need it for. The net makes the weighing quick and efficient and keeps the fish from getting beat up. I don’t like to weigh in a landing net – that doesn’t seem to stay hooked up all that well. The net arrangement I use is pretty simple and easy.

You can also use a duck decoy bag… also doesn’t take up any room. Doubles as a big old livewell too if needs be. I use a 50lb scale and have a spring scale that goes to 100lbs. The spring scale was dirt cheap and it was very accurate waying at 75lbs.

Great ideas with the extra net and decoy bag. I mentioned this in the other post, but I had a tough time with a couple of the big fish I caught last year, even using the landing net to weigh.

I think I’m going to try out a bathroom scale a couple of times to see how it works. Doesn’t take up much room, and puts very little stress on the fish. Just step on the scale without the fish and then with the fish. Subtract the difference.

Mine goes to 220lbs. I replaced the hook with a quick grip.

I have the same one Rob has. Works great!

Just do a google for Coffey Scale and you will find many retailers that cary them.

The silver one is 110# and the orange one is 220#.

Just thought I would remind everyone…cats don’t have scales.

I use a 50lb Rappala Digital scale it weighs up to 68 pounds or so last time I calibrated it.

So that should work for just about any Flathead.

I have one, or should I say had. I tried to weigh my 66.5″ sturgeon I got a couple years ago. The scale could just not bear the strain

I need an upgrade. Thanks for the info guys

Even I held back on that one. Have you no shame? Never mind, that was rhetorical.
