Can’t we all get along?

It’s past my curfew…but I have a question for you all.

If it’s legal in a state, it’s their tradition- why should anyone look down on, get angry with someone that can do something that you or I can’t or won’t do because of laws or beliefs?

Are we like the stereotype elitist fly fisherman that would never dunk a worm and look down his nose at anyone that would?

Posting a picture of a limit of large bass getting cleaned would draw angry posts from the bass fellas as would a post with a few full of egg walleyes in front of a fish cleaning house. I get shivers when I see a large sturgeon held by the gills and would have a hard time with a 60 incher under a knife.

It’s legal. Why should it bother someone that could be hundreds of miles away…and might not know anything about the fish?

If it is out of state, I don’t care much. Although when I see people hand grabbl’en or noodling, I do think they are idiots. Not because they could get hurt, but they waste a resource.

Smaller fish of any species doesn’t bother me at all, but I don’t like seeing good genes go to waste and wrecking the gene pool by keeping only the big, trophy fish.

People keeping and eating flatheads under 10#s in Minnesota doesn’t bother me too much. Although it is a little different concerning sturgeon, flatheads and musky. Flatheads and musky, just because their niche is small populations throughout the year classes. Sturgeon, because you can’t keep small ones and for some, they don’t want them because they don’t harvest enough eggs for the 1 tag limit.

I’m guilty as charged on this one!

It’s legal in our state to keep as many catfish as one wants channel, flathead, etc. from just about all rivers. Doesn’t mean I agree with the actions of those who would do just that.

Sure, someone keeping a 35″ flathead is within their rights, but it wouldn’t keep me from sharing my $0.02 about it…(e.g. how long it takes to grow a fish that size, why keep fish that sized when there are plenty 2-3# channel cats that are a much more renewable resource).

There’s a difference between illegal and unethical, but I know that’s subjective and becomes a slippery slope.

    Maybe that’s my point Shawn.

Your and my point of view differs from others. It’s legal, so which one is right? Both.

There are many examples of CPR that have improved a fishery for each persons “special” fish. So does that make a person better than the person that takes home a legal catch?

I’m sure Qwacker will be using small type this morning.

I’d argue that with the exception of the 3 I mentioned before, keeping a limit of the smaller fish helps the fishery.

Maybe it comes with age but I tend not to let any of that stuff bother me. I can’t and won’t put a knife to an 8 pound walleye but if someone else does then that is their right. Chances are that isn’t a common practice for them and I just caught them on a rare day. Down my home way they hog for big cats. Alot of big fish get kept but there never seems to be a shortage of fish the next year. Snagging paddlefish is a time honored tradition in some waters and people there look forward to it as much as Minnesotans look forward to their walleye opener. Fishermen are fishermen and we need to close ranks and protect ourselves from the outside dangers rather than picking at each other so much.

To me, it’s all about managing the resource. If people are making educated decisions, that’s great. If they’re out there wasting the resource it’ll make me upset. Included in that statement are people who take advantage of a resource to the detriment of others.

People act like limits are all set with the best health of the fishery in mind. Not true at all. Voluntary catch and release has resulted in drastic improvements to fishing opportunities. Just imagine if everyone always kept their heaviest “legal limit” of sturgeon from the St. Croix, flatheads from the Minnesota, muskies from Mille Lacs, or walleyes from Pool 4. Without voluntary catch & release, we wouldn’t have nearly as many PB posts on this site.

No, I don’t think it’s OK just because it’s legal. I don’t think someone who eats a 10# walleye is a bad person, but I do think that person makes a bad decision.

Those are not even paddlefish. Everyone who knows anything KNOWS they are green sunfish

I Agree with Redneck. I would talk to them in a friendly manner about the resource, but if they feel the need to keep the fish, are not wasteful and use the whole fish, I don’t have a problem with it.

I do think most people who abuse a resource are not the guys on the water most weekends, but rather the “once a year” guys who need to get home and tell everyone about the huge LIMIT they caught.

    Personally, I prefer a hamburger

One more thing, this was posted in the Catfish forum, one of the most popular sections of IDO. We are equal oportunity fisherman here, and most of the guys spend most, or all of their available time fishing for cats and sturgeon.

You might want to check out the Sturgeon Excursion post at the top of this page. Wigwam is full this year, but they are making space at other resorts for the sturgeon fishing. I have been there the last 3 years and it is a HOOT. No snobs there…….well, maybe Kooty but that is for a different reason

Did you have a few too many green beers or what??

I know what you are saying and I think if you look around, calling Bk a walleye snob, well, it just doesn’t fit. He’s completely a cat snob. I remember not too long ago a young punk from Nebraska came along posting pics of catching cats about this time of year. Certain folks jumped all over him. Yup, elitist attitude.

I’m as guilty as anyone. I see a 26 or 27 inch walleye on shore and I go WTF?? Then someone else comes along and says, hey, it’s legal, leave them alone. I see a 48″ musky bouncing around in a livewell and I go WTF?? Again, my elitist attitude shines through. So, I see how it’s easy to come across in that manner.

If it wasn’t for you teaching me there are many other species beside walleyes, I would probably have a worse attitude. I think I know what Bk was trying to convey, he’s against the harvest of these fish. That’s OK. The cool thing about here, you can disagree with him(as most of us do all time ). Just don’t call him a walleye snob, he will take offense to such nasty name calling.

Oh, and don’t let Farmboy tell you any of his nonesense. He’s still mad at me about his brother-in-law.
