Sealing your Cork

Curt, a fella that frequents Everts was showing me how he seals his cork handles on his rods last fall.

My first question was…”why?” He explained that especially with bait fisherman, the oils soak into the cork and scales stick. Using the cork sealer, the oils, dirt and scales stay on the top of the cork and easily wipe off. Even water beads up similar to a newly waxed car.

Appling the sealer is pretty darn easy, since I can do it! Just make sure your cork is clean and dry. Use a brush or even a clean rag or towel and wipe on a light coat ensuring the cork is covered. Using a hair drier, turn your rod applying heat. The sealer can be seen drying “into” the cork. One coat is plenty…in fact, the second coat will bead off. That’s it!

This is an easy, inexpensive way to help keep your handles free of the junky build up and less prone to chipping.

I always thought the scales, grime, and other stuff adds a special touch of “funk” to the rod that says catfish…

So, where do you get that stuff? Do they feel any different after the sealer is applied?

    Another cork tip:
I have a rod that my bro-in-law’s yorkie decided to gnaw on. Even took to the Calcutta that was on it! Well, it took a few gouges out of the cork. So, I took a cork from a wine bottle, used a medium rasp to get a bunch of shavings, and made a paste with the cork shavings and exterior wood glue. Filled in the gouges, let it dry, and sanded the cork down. Looks and feels good as new! Since that worked so well, I patched up some voids in quite a few other rods the same way.

A tip that I think I learned here is to use rubbing alcohol to clean the cork. It really cuts the dirt and grime and evaporates in no time. It makes the cork look like when you took the rod out of the package

Ryan, because it soaks in to the cork, it’s hard to tell they are sealed. There is a very slight sheen to them…but when I was sealing my rods, I tried to seal a rod that Curt did last fall. My point is that I didn’t notice it was already sealed.

    Dean has the sealer.

Hmm. That’s not exactly down the block for me. I guess I will just have to get down there this spring.

Real men don’t seal no Cork!.. Half the fun I have in the Winter is picking every last Shad Scale individually off of all my Cat equipment….

I just use those Scotch Brite pads a few times a year on my Cork and Fishing poles.

Not to worry guys, you can still pick the scales out of the reel and the rest of the rod.

People seal thier cork? Must be a trait passed down from those anal-rententive walleye or bass types.

Nothing is more satisfying than a weathered rod plastered with the previous season’s scales and memories.

White rods don’t need any sealing, the black foam acts as a sponge that shows off your achievements, one stinky molecule at a time. Washing that off is sacreligious and against The Rules developed by our catmen forefathers.

Just one more reason to seal the cork.

BK-you could just leave the plastic wrap on the handle when you buy a new rod? That will show what a pro you are.

Who has time for winter fishing?
Between sealing all my cork handles and cruising Office Max for business card holders…the winter is pretty much shot.

It’s all those walleye sinkers my dad fed me when I was a kid.
