Cat Tip of the Day: Snag Buster

This is a Cat Tip I posted back in 2006. With our catfishing season just a month or so away this seems like a good time to post it again and pass the advice along to some of our newer catfishermen.

There are two of you in the boat, on border waters, with four rods out. OK – Time to move. Oh, bother!! All four rods are snagged. 80# test line, go ahead, tug those lines loose. $#&!, That hurts the hands.

Here is a little tip to help you break those snags loose. Take a healthy piece of dowel or an old broom stick and cut it into about 8″ lengths. As long as you are cutting make about 3 or 4 of them. Wrap the middle of each dowel with about 5 or 6 good wraps of tape – I use electrical tape.

Next time you get hung up, give yourself about 6′ to 10′ of slack, get well clear of the rod tip and set your rod in a safe place. Wrap that line around the middle of the dowel over the tape you’ve placed there. Snug up the line, the tape helps keep the line from slipping. Back up slowly and break the line loose from the snag.

I made four of my Snag Busters and have them scattered around the boat. They are like pliers in a boat, I can never seem to find it if I have only one in the boat. They don’t take up any room and you will need it most every night you fish.

Great idea never thought of the tape. Keep the tips coming. I do some cat fishing on the Miss. and always looking to add some info that I don’t have to learn by trial and error. I am going to try on Petenwell this year. Thanks

I think ShawnIL needs to take that back to IL with him. There are a number of folks from IL that were having problems breaking braid and mono.

    Great tip!

Looks like a better idea than wrapping it around your hand and pulling. Did that once and my hand was so cut up, it looked like I put it in a weed wacker!

A few years ago on the Minnesota I saw a guy use a gallon jug with about a foot of heavy line and a BIG snap swivel to get his rigs out of the trees and snags.
He would put about 2″ of water in the jug and clip it to his line and let the current take it past the snag 20-30 feet,
then he would take up the slack and give it a rip,
most times it came rite out, if not he would just give it more line till he was past the snag and do it again,

I make my sticks about 4 inches long. I have one in my Float-Tech, one in my pants pocket and two in the tackle box…well, that’s at the start of the season. Never know where they are by the end of the season.

Two are better than one though.

Thats a great Ideal with a milk jug. Thanks for the tip.

I use the gaft that stays in the boat all year. It is primarily used during snagging season. With starts March 15 here in Missouri.

I do like that mono…that is a good tip. I’ll get something like that in the boat this summer. Maybe I can replace my clonk with it…

THAT almost hurt my tummy from laughing.

Shawn, meet Pug…the only person to have a clonk stolen.

You should have heard him making a police report..the officer said..A WHAT?
