There were a few people at last years Sturgeon Excursion that had some pretty good size fish.

Ryan, Dtro and who what the other fella that was into them pretty consistent. What do you guys think helped put those fish in your boat? Location, bait or your good looks?

I think we had a good location. We sat in pretty much the same spot for the past two years. That being said, we made small movements in the area. If action slowed, we’d slide out into the channel more, or tighter into shore, or slip downstream a bit until action picked up. I don’t know that there was any key structure that we were on–just a fishy area.

That being said, my biggest last year was caught within the first hour of fishing within a stone’s skip of the boat launch

Step 1) Look for a red Lund with Merc on the back.
Step 2) See if the owner of the boat has a grey beard.
Step 3) Look closely to see if there’s a “Rootski” sticker on the side of the Lund.
Step 4) Don’t fish anywhere near the red Lund with the Merc on the back that says “Rootski” on the side!

The last few years we’ve caught a lot of fish, very steady action. But NOTHING over 50 inches I’m looking forward to your seminar Brian. And I want GPS numbers

I thought we’d get more conversation out of this post

It seems to me that the flatter an area is the worse I do, and if we’re on the side of a drop we do better. It’s almost as though they “follow the wall” as they move up river. A steep vertical drop that’s parallel to the current seems to be a good spot. The problem of course is that I’m basing that idea on what, 6 or 8 days of Sturgeon fishing total? It’s really tempting to get one of those Lakemaster Rainy River/LOTW chips but I have a hard time justifying the expense for the one trip up there per year.

I do believe your onto something there Rootski!

In 4 Mile Bay the best fishing comes from fishing along the “old river bed” sides. There are certain locations that seem to stack up the fish that are moving up stream to possibly rest (?) The fish in these “holes” are hard, but not totally impossible to catch. It seems that fishing “around” these areas produce the most fish and often times the largest.

Of course as soon as I say that…someone will post a picture of a submarine that was caught in 13 fow on a flat.

Rootski, if you still have the spot you fished last year on your gps…check out what was down stream about 200 yards from you if you have a chance to use the LakeMaster chip or the LakeMaster® Woods/Rainy Contour Pro.

The Woods/Rainy chip has now been expanded to include all of Rainy Lake* & the Rainy River (U.S. and Canadian Water)! The new LakeMaster Contour Pro Software in amazing 1-foot Hi-Def contours not only expands the map coverage, it will help locate the walls, holes and neck down areas.

I don’t know all the technical stuff about the software, so here’s the link and you guys can figure it out.
