Brandon J. Buol of Dewar, IA drove up to Everts Fishing Resort with family and friends last Thursday as he’s done a number of time before, but always in March.

This time the goal was not the walleye/sauger bite…it was the flathead catfish that his eyes were focused on.

Well, they fished for walleyes in the morning, catfish in the afternoon and then flatheads in the evening.

It was their last night to fish and a little concerned that they didn’t have a flat to show for their efforts…..until most of the family were in bed.

At 3:45 am Brandon heard the clicker sound on his pole. The FISH ON alarm was sounded and after a good battle, Brandon’s first truly big cat was boated.

Measurements were taken along with a few photos and back into to Mighty River she went. It was 45 inches long, and 42 pounds

When Brandon retold the story to me the next morning, I could hear the electricity in his voice and see it in his eyes. From now on, I think he might be fishing walleyes…but thinking Flatheads!

“That fish made the trip!!” exclaimed Brandon.
