bullhead question

I like to use bluegills for bait, but the desire to fish spots on the “western side of the Mississippi” means I have to use bullies, suckers or other such bait. My question is how to catch bullheads prior to going out catting? Don’t you have to fish for them after dark or is there a secret to catching them in the daylight? Locations are another question….not specific ones. Back ends of sloughs I’m guessing would be a good spot to start. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
