The game plan was to fish pool 7 for walleys search out some new spots. The altenator on my outboard quit charging so we changed plans and stayed around the dam area. We were working some flats throwing evertything from live bait, plastics, cranks and sonars. There is a very good year class of 2-3lb sheephead.
Jim was using an Everts 1/4 ounce sonar when he tells me he is snagged. I kick up the trolling motor and start heading over that way and I am watching his rod to see were the line is. I asked him are you sure it`s not a fish. He gives it a couple of yanks and say`s no it is a snag. He puts steady tenstion on it and I see his rod go thump thump I say I think it`s a fish. Then his rod really go`s THUMP THUMP and he finally agrees it`s a FISH. I reel up my line and commence to chase this bugger down with the trolling motor. he takes us out into 35 feet of water. I am worried he is heading for some snag. Jim only has ten pound crystal and can`t move the beast. The only time he gains line is when I use the trolling motor. Finally Jim gets him turned or more likely just agravated him enough that he changes direction and heads for 6 feet of water. By this time Jim is complaning how tired his arm is getting. I`ve had a bottle of water and 2 cigarets and we haven`t seen the fish yet. Finaly the fish gets boatside and we get a look OH MY G-D I have a big net but it looked pretty small at that moment. The battle was not nearly over yet from the first time we had our first look to the time he was netted was another half a bottle of water later. I really got thirsty watching Jim fight that fish.
Once in the boat I didn`t have anything to really measure or weigh him acurately. My 36 inch measure was way short we came up with 47- 48 inches sliding the rule down him. Had nothing to get a girth measurement. Somebody have an estimate of his weight?
We released him as soon as pics were taken. What a HOOT
