Was too gorgeous of a night yesterday to let it slip by. I was able to hook up with my good friend Brian Klawitter for our yearly “Catfishing for Walleyes” trip! Well… guess it wasn’t yearly as its been 2 years since I’ve fished with Brian now.
Bait of choice? 5-7″ Live Sucker Minnows
Equipment? St Croix Classic Cat rod w/ Okuma Epixor spinning reel
Rigging of choice? 6/0-7/0 Gamakatsu Octopus, 3oz No-Roll, 80lb PowerPro
Location? Shallow slack water adjacent to current seam
The result?? First clicker run of the year!
This girl taped out a touch over 26″.
While I was unhooking this one, BK missed the hookset on another costing us a great double photo opportunity.
20 minutes later… same rod, same bait location, similar result only bigger this time.
This girl was edging over the 28″ mark. Next two photos are both of the same fish.
Both these walleyes had spawned out already or we might have been looking at some pretty chunky fish. That 28″ would have been over 10lbs carrying eggs.
Once again, Brian had to apologize to me for not hooking up with a flathead or two. Crazy to think that boating a 26 & 28 inch walleye back to back within a half hour constitutes a slow night. I said most folks would kill to have a night like that. Fun times!
Thanks again Brian!
Looks like the walleye pattern is emerging which should mean hot flathead action in about, hmmmm…. 1-1/2 weeks maybe???? Water temps are still a bit cool.
BTW Brian… I really, really enjoyed our 1-1/2 to 2 hour wait for the barge to clear the lock at 1am last night. LOL! What a bummer!
