Hello all,
I have fished my whole life in the Grand Rapids area, and have decided to try something new. I am coming up to the Rainy River for the first time for the Sturgeon Excursion. I am staying at Wigwam, and am very excited. I have read most of the forum strings I could find on sturgeon fishing, and I think I am almost set up. I have a few questions:
1) Why the circle hooks? I have heard both good and bad on these. Is there an argument against using an Octopus, Wide Gap, or Nautilus?
2) I am a GPS freak, and have purchased the new LOW and Rainy chip. My buddy, who has been going up to the river sturgeon fishing for 3 years, laughed and said that all you do is find an open spot on the river and anchor. He claims to have had success, backed up by a few photos. What should I be looking for in depth, structure, and location? Is my chip going to be useful for something other than keeping me out of Canadien waters?
3) Any advice for the fighting or handling of the fish? I see guys often pull up anchor on larger catches. What about when they “roll”, do you do anything different? How about landing them?
I know this is a lot of stuff for one post, but thanks for the responses. I hope this is as much fun as I think it is going to be. I am pretty excited about feeling the rod bend against such an awesome fish.
