Good Time to Scout the River

Get some paper or printed copies of the Minnesota river, a pencil (ink no good) and get in your boat. Or the more modern fisherman can just bring out a GPS unit I guess.

I was driving down Blackdog today and those root wads that the cats will be using later on in the year, if the river goes up, are exposed. Don’t rely on your memory, well, I know I couldn’t rely on mine anyway. I would look down the shoreline and there were trees at about the same spot at the edge of the bank. Yet, some had no roots exposed, resting on a sloped shoreline and some did where it was washed out. And if you don’t get out at all before the river goes up, there will be a lot of good spots that you’ll just cruise by not knowing the prime gnarly root wads in deeper water are exposed at the bank. Sure, we know where washouts are on bends in the river, but these roots were on straight stretches. A fairly uniform treeline where all the trees look the same, yet there would be sections that offer a lot of cover and 20 yards down river it would not. These will also be ares that won’t get any pressure or attention.

Just a little friendly tip. So who is taking me out Saturday scouting?
