Mudpuppy Fishing! (and a surprise)

Well, we couldn’t connect with a channel cat to save our lives last night, but the mudpuppies were sure active. I had never caught one before, but we got 4 within short order last night. They were all in the 11″-13″ range. They are neat little buggers!

Oh yeah, and we suffered a beat-down at the hands of this 58″ x 24″ sturgeon! Note the size of the boat. Getting her in was very interesting

Also, it was tagged, so I’ll post info when I get it.

This past spring I caught my first mudpuppy. It was about a foot long. Cool little creature.

    Here’s the tag info:

    Tagged: 09/22/2005 57.28″ x 22.0″
Caught: 4/24/2006 57.5″ 1 mile south of tagging spot
    Caught: 10/10/2006 57″ x 21.5″ 21 miles south of tagging spot
    Caught: 11/01/2006 58″ x 24″ 21 miles south of tagging area

So, it moved quite a bit in 2006, but we caught it in the same area it was caught 10/10/2006. Didn’t grow too much, either.

I almost said something about it being mono since it was you, but I thought the other guy caught it so I took a chance. I guess then he figured the bait was ok because he didn’t see PP?

That is pretty sweet!! C&R at work!!

Couple thoughts from my spinning brain…

    – That sturgeon must not have liked where he was tagged if he moved 23 miles and found a new home that he has stayed at for awhile.

    – Is the population of sturgeon in this area smaller than one might think if the same tagged fish was caught a couple times in exactly the same area? Are the same fish being caught over and over?

The DNR is obviously trying to answer that question but my gut feeling is the sturgeon population is not as large as one might think and us anglers catch a good percentage of the same fish over and over and over again. Its easy to think the population is large when you are fishing an area that concentrates the fish.

The DNR boys are definitely busy trying to answer that question but it makes you wonder how many are really out there?

Very good point Chris. Keep in mind that this fish was caught in one little 1/4 mile area. There are 44 miles of P4 and the lake it’s self holds fish.

It will be interesting to see what the boys at the dnr come up with.

There’s a lot of water out there and they are tagging tons of fish. I’d like to think a fish being re-caught just happens to be a little more aggressive than the rest.

ps. Someone should bend their ear at the DNR as they should have a good idea about the population and other statistical goodies wit hall the tagging they do.

Mudpuppy Madness! I never thought I would post a mudpuppy but here goes. You can tell I didn’t want to touch it.
