Sturgeon Diversion – OUT WITH A BANG

Man, what a day on the Croix last Friday!

Started by going to Moore’s Bait for some shad , then met Mr.DeMars for some afternoon fishing.

Steve started with fatheads and within the first hour he landed a beauty 31″ sturgeon in 31 fow! Half hour later he caught a walleye magnet, its funny how close the walleye boats will fish when they see ya get one on such a big river . Fifteen minutes later my phone rang, and FISH ON!! After a few reel peels, Steve boated a nice 49″ sturgeon on shad. We gave it a few more minutes and decided to relocate, and I’m glad we did.

At the new spot I proceeded to catch my one fish, thought it was a smaa/medium stugreon, turned out to be a nice carp ……….. that was released outside of my boat.
Then Bang, Steve’s rod bent over and we did the anchor dance, this one wanted to test our wits. We knew right off, and after she took more line out that this was another nice fish. After the battle we measured his last AND BEST fish of the day at 49.5″!!

All and all, great weather and company, and best of all, boated some nice sturgeons!

    Part 2:

Well, that 1 carp just didn’t do it for me, so after thinking about it for about 2 minutes, I went back out after dinner, and I’m glad I did.

I landed at my spot at 8:55 and at 9:07, WHAMMO. I knew after a huge jump and splash in the distance this was going to be a monster, I fought her for 10 minutes of peeling line and then right under the boat my 80lb Power Pro broke off at the hook .

I was sitting there feeling sorry for myself until, bang, another fish on!

This one came in at 46″, and suddenly I wasn’t feeling as bad for myself.

Just as I was getting settled, I hooked another good one, battled her for a good ten minutes, and landed a nice 58″, couldn’t get a jump out of her, though.

Man do I need a bigger net!

Last fish of the night came a short 20 minutes later, a small but much appreciated 38″, I thanked her (not with a kiss BK) and sent her back on her way.

Couldn’t have asked for a better day of fishing.

Thank you Mighty St.Croix Sturgeon for my first full sturgeon season

Thanks for that wonderful sturgeon trip, Jarrett. You were a great guide and put me on some nice fish. You promised me bigger fish and you came through. Those two 49 inch fish were my biggest fish for the season. I hated to do it to you but you shouldn’t answer your cell phone when you have a bite. I just had to take over and catch it for you – a healthy 49 inch sturgeon. I love it when they try to pull you out of the boat.

It was really nice to finally spend some time on the St Croix with the weather cooperating – calm winds, cool fall temps, light boat traffic, and big sturgeon. A good time was had by all.

What a way to end the season eh Steve?! Those high 40 and up fish are a completely different animal!

I am glad to hear the season is going out with a bang! And a wee bit jealous too.

    Nice fish guys.

    again with the blurred photos

    WTG guys!

Looks like you found some bigger fish.

I really wish there was more time, I’d love to do some exploring.

I had planned to fish tomorrow (have the day off). But the weather doesn’t look that good and with a good wind, my boat isn’t the best out there.

Nice fish guys – just a little drift off subject here – can some of you folks fill me in on proper equipment for fishing for sturgeon? I have purchased a few musky blanks I plan to build up to do battle with the critters – any input would be appreciated on reels especially. Would like to be able to use the same rods for northern, paddlefish snagging down here on the Mississippi and possibly fishing for sturgeon someday. All input appreciated… Chuckles

Great fish guys!! Looks like you two had a blast ending the season with a bang too. And to answer the rod reel question I has a 3 Salt Striker SBF-50’s I use that are spinning reels, two mounted to king cats and one to a berkley glow stick. All are used for cat’s too. Two of the Salt Strikers have 20 lb mono on them, one has 80 lb power pro. I also fish a shimono tekota 600 mated with a shakespear tiger rod, medium action with 100 lb power pro( kind over kill but great for flats too!) Worked great on the sturgeon over the weekend. The tiger rod is very sensitive too. I loved it this weekend. Thanks BOB MOORE!! I know a few others use the shakspear tigers, the glow sticks and king cats also. Its all up to personal choice. But if its just for sturgeon I love the medium action shakespear the best.

Chuckles, anything will work as long as it’s not white.

You might want to start a new post on the rod question…that could get long.

    Pug..your a little …? I’m a lot!

    Croixer…how did you do today?

I must be used to it because I didn’t even notice!

Brian, you got me. Unless a little jealous is throwing a tantrum face down in the pillow with muffled screams and legs spasticly kicking like a drowning man trying to find the surface? Is that a little or a lot?

Hey ROBIN, I only met you once up at LOW Stugeon Excursion, but I could crop in some daytime backgrounds and pm them to you if it would help put you on some fish
