A crawler and shad with the tail cut off(the biggest shad i’ve gotten fom Bob) got the 54″er to bite. Didn’t seem like an above average fish til she came nearly all the way out of the water. 10 minutes later and an anchor rope gettin pulled up it was say cheese time

It was a heck of a lot of fun being able to help out boating that fish Aaron got, I also had one I thought got off and jumped up in my face when I looked over the side of the boat to see if my sinker was coming up. Needless to say I saw a whole lot of my first sturgeon of the day close up Also too a slap in the face by my 9 lbs channels tail later on that night!! All in all it was a great day and night of fishing and very well worth my sunburned face and head

ALSO A BIG THANKS TO BOB MOORE FOR PUTTING ON THESE GREAT CONTESTS FOR US TO FISH I CAN”T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!!!

…shad with the tail cut off…

My brother was doing that too and out fishing me. I started doing that and then started to catch up. Must be something to it. He’d literally just barely nip off the tail.

Nice fish guys, sorry I couldn’t make the tournament (there should be more than 1 sturgeon tournament each year)! and……nice tip on the tails

It will be interesting to see if others see improved catch rates snipping the tail. You wouldn’t think it would make a difference, but then none of us are sturgeon. Early on, I cut the bigger ones in half and that’s when I wasn’t catching as many. So the only reasonable explanation I can think of is is emits a steady scent trail and once they find it, the tasty insides are intact, rewarding them and causing them to hold onto it as they mouth the bait working out the insides and mashing up the rest of it.

    ???

What do I know though. I just popped my sturgeon cherry.

I was able to acquire a photo of Manny’s 3rd place Sturgeon for the Moore’s Bait website (Thanks, Steve! ). I thought I would post it here too, so we can all admire his fish along with the other winners. Its measurements were 46 x 17.

    Good job guys!!

Edited to add: I want to encourage all of you guys to submit your photos to Bob’s site! There is an email link at the bottom of his Fishing Photos page to send them to. Moore’s Bait Website

No, we spent the day on the Back Porch. Manny caught that fish within 5 minutes of our setting up to start the day. We lasted until about 1:30 down at the King Plant and then the big boat traffic became unbearable so we moved upstream. We caught one 33″ sturgeon and a small channel cat upstream before we called it a day at 4:30pm.

Seems like many left around 4:30 or so. It might be nice to have a tourney run from 7-4 or whatever, but give us time to meet after for food, beer and bs. Just a thought.

No way! the 2 biggest came between 8:30 and 8:45!

I even wish it was like 7am-midnight.
Life and I stayed out for almost 15 hours for a little casting before the contest. and after the contest so I could rest before the drive home.
Well I am off to try and break the next barrier ….60 inches!
