Ok guys here we go again
After B.K. got me all stinky and excited Friday night and with the weather not to my liking for bow hunting. I tossed my bow in the trash grabed my dad and the boat and blasted down to Everts.
We pulled in around 3pm after B.K. got done talking about peanut butter cookies and selling us stuff we headed out with his blessing
My dad and I tried pitching wingdams looking for walleyes for a coulpe of hours. All we had to show was a crappie that came in on a red fireball jig in about 12′. (Ex-crappie guy)
So we pulled up ship about a hour before dark and headed up river to the spot. Set or anchor in about 38″ with deeper water on both sides of us. I was thinking the big cats would have been lying down there waiting for some shad sitting on the bottom. After about 1/2 of telling the tail of Friday to my dad for the 100th time his rod starting dancing. The fight was on he pulled in about a 10′ cat. We ended up boating 5 cats from 6pm to around dark.
In between cattin I was hanging on to my rod waiting for the moment to happen. Well needless say I remembered BK telling me to feel for a sunfish nibble. That happened I set the hook and my rod doubled over the side of the boat. I looked at my dad and said here we go………..
STURGEON
I was fighting that thing like a PRO! I was not to doing anything with er. I was never in control Had my Muskie rod with the wench crank per my lessons from BK. Just hanging on for joy at this point. All of a sudden behind the boat out of the water she came. Then back down to the bottom with all the line I just gained. GONE! After the 3rd run she decided to really put a show on for all the other boats to see. Right next to the boat I am mean RIGHT next to the boat out she came VERTICAL! I was looking at this old beast of the fish right in the eyes. Now I am not that tall but at least 5’10” I allmost pee’d a little back down she went again rod bent over. I was thinking I need to buy a different rod like yesterday poof she was OFF Pulled my rig up and the hooks BK sold me were no good It was not straight but pretty darn close. I was thinking that this was bigger than my 1st. At least pops got to have the deer in the head lights look until it was his turn.
Re-baited and tossed out again. This would be different. Felt the same sunfish bite tightened my line set the hook and she was on. I thought well I had my chance……….as heart breaking as it was I handed my rod to the old man Not sure what I was thinking but he was hooting and hollaring OH MY LORD what do we have on? I said a STURGEON! HANG ON. 5 runs and I was able to reach in grab her by the tail (Walleye net was to small ) Got her in the boat put the tape on her 44″ Took a couple pics. Then revived her for at least 5 to 10 minutes then watched her go right down giving me a good bye splash of tasty sippi water
We ended the night early boating 5 cats and 1 beautiful sturgeon. We missed a bunch of good bites tonight. Man o Man our boat was on fire. We used 3 packs of shad and a dozen crawlers. Thought we could mash a bunch of minnows on a hook but that did’nt work.
Due to some shotty camera work I muffed the pic of dad holding his fish. But he is better and wiser than I and only held part of his finger in front of the camera when he took one of me holding his fish. It was a team effort!!
If you can’t tell I am HOOKED
