That gar session was amazing… I’ve been thinking a road-trip down south sometime in the future will be in the cards!

I don’t mean to brag guys but I was fortunate enough to go fishing with Kirk Kirkland this summer and I happened to get a 176 lber with him. His largest for 2007 so far.

I would really love to see the program you guys are talking about. Anyone got it on a tape or disc?

As someone else pointed out, both shows will be replayed this coming Saturday around noon depending on where you live.

I’m jealous and very impressed, NICE FISH!

Alright guys, here is the story. We were on Sam Rayburn Res. in Texas. They have some huge gar in there. It had been raining in Texas all summer long so that is why we were at Sam Rayburn. The Trinity R. system is another good place to go but because of high water it wasn’t this year. We had guide Kirk Kirkland for 2 days at $450/day. A little spendy but worth the experience for me. He uses a big chunk of carp for bait. My dad was hungry but I told him that that was for the fish. We also fished with jugs. Jug fishing was another interesting technique especially when one takes the bait. Remember the “Jaws” movies when they follow the big floats? Kind of like that.

Fishing was slow but we managed to get the big girl (approx. 176 lbs. using weight formula) and another 45 lber. Google “Kirk Kirkland” to get his website. It is hot in July in Texas. We used unbrellas for the sun more than for the rain. We had other bites but they let go of the bait.

Afterwards, we caught some Longear and Redear Sunfish for my lifelist. How about that lassoo job of that big fish? The big girl took about 10 minutes to catch using 100 lb. line. It can get kind of hairy once in the boat. Using caution with these critters is just common sense. When thrashing they could rip a long gash with ease. After the initial thrashing they are as docile as a puppy dog.

They are a really cool fish that are not respected very well down there. We released ours but they also have bowfishing where they harvest some real big ones down there. I wish there would be stricter regs on these fish because this is one of the few places you can catch them of this size. Enjoy the pics!

Wow, I was dreaming about a trip and you’ve already done it! Way to go. It had to be a blast.
