This one is from me….. to (Young guns) RiverHog, Flaco651 and who could forget Pierbridge.
You guys make for a fun night on the water.
Here ya go buddy

I predict they struggle to get a 2nd place Channel on the Board next Tourney if that.
Well I was sorta right on that one you did struggle to take second in the channel division with your lucky second place TIE channel cat.
Don’t forget this one:

Mark my words…..if Sat night’s weather is similar to today’s with warm/overcast yet stable, or better yet, an approaching front, big fish will be caught and it will take at least a 20lb fish to take first and more than likely a 30 will be needed.
And I was petty close on that one also and my point of not many flats especially bigger ones being caught held true.
4 flats caught for the WHOLE tourney with 3rd place a measly 6 pounder by Jake..
I’ve come to the conclusion you guys are growing these big Flats on some Cat farm and busting them out when needed.
Oh and thanks for inviting those Bell Plane Cat League guy ringers I’m sure it was just a coincidence they just happened enter late and camp out for 12 HOURS on OUR go to spot….
At least my boat cashed in this time and it coulda been better…DARN circle hooks…. …
Remember your only as good as your next Catfish…

There you go, blame the hooks.
just givin ya the needle Gary
actually the second quote was made myself. I thought it was funny that a front moved through and we caught a big fish

If you actually believed I went home after the storm you gotta be crazy.
Just remember, I never give up and never quit. If Hog and Pier would’ve wanted to leave because of the storm(which would never happen either) I would have fished solo.

you’re welcome in my boat any time
You guys go ahead and stay out there in the lightning and hail… I’ll take cover or fish another day if the storm is too bad.
I once met a guy that had a noticable necklace hanging around his neck.. A lightning bolt going through a bass. I commented on the necklace because it was unique, obviously custom made. Apperantly he was the guy I heard about on the news the year prior that got struck by lightning in his boat and survived it. I cant remember the extent of his permanent body and nerve damage, but I do remember his discriptions of the conditon of his boat after, and all of the fish in the livewell were cooked from the heat of the electricity… the electricity that 1st passed through his body before making contact with the boat.. or the bolt coming out of his toes more or less.
I remembered everything he said as I was on a lake several years back with friends and my hair stood on end with a nearby storm watching static charge lightning flickers coming off everything in my boat that could conduct electricity… and the panic fear when I crashed my boat into shore with passengers in the boat… and the lightning that struck less than 100 yards away after the chinese fire drill.
If you guys want to brave the storms… go right ahead! I’ll be somewhere safe along with my passengers(willingly or not). I can handle getting my butt chewed for getting off the water… I can always go back when the storms clear.
I understand taking shelter during the storm itself, and wouldn’t have protested if Pier decided to head back to the landing to wait it out. As long as we weren’t packing up and quitting all together. By the time we decided to try to get out of the rain for a while, it was coming to an end.

Wouldn’t have it any other way DTro sure makes the tourney a lot funner.
If I see lighting we’re gone our problem was where we were at at the time the heavy rain was hitting we did try to get to cover but by the time we got to it like Flaco said it passed and was clear the rest of the night.
Fun time for sure!
I hear ya Dave.
Lightning doesn’t bother me a whole lot on the river. A lake?…..oh yeah….c u later
It’s just nice to fish with people who are willing to “sit it out” if need be. I know some guys will pull anchor at the first sight of a flash (even heat lightning).
I know one guy who would’ve never caught his personal best 48lb if we were “fair weather fisherman”
That’s me Dtro!
Well…I just watch the “heat” lightening closely.
No fish..not even a World Record is worth toying with lightening. The fish will be there another day…and I want to be there too.!
Not saying that you and Larry should be coming in though…

I am a bit neurotic when it comes to lightning ( ref ). The girlfriend told a few people how I was up and out of bed early Sat morning. I used to unplug all the electronics, but I don’t anymore. Saturday morning really wasn’t about the lightning, as I love storms.
I don’t see how you can feel any safer on a river though. It’s a smaller body of water with plenty of higher points around you, but that doesn’t mean a branch can’t surge through you or your boat to the main bolt.
Interesting Read I think the reason lightning wigs me out so much is because it is so random and unpredictable. The odds are pretty low, but we all know my luck….
ps. Responding to BK, Tony and I fished the tourney last year where some were hit with rain. We were miles from the launch watching the heat lightening. The problem is to get back we would be with the storm moving right at us. I think most of that lightning was cloud to cloud though. Still….
My greatest fear overall is inexperienced boaters going by stories or hear-say of prior events when people got stuck, or fished out a storm… sometimes with incredible results on the fishing. The wrong boat in the wrong place at the wrong time that willingly puts itself in harms way with the expectations of a magical fishing trip could easily end up with disaster, or death for someone, or some group in a boat. I dont think the other occupants in the boat that is struck by lightning are going to feel any better if they drown vs getting zapped.
We are all aware of previous deaths that have occured to people on golf courses, kids on playgrounds, people that get struck on the water, lake or river. If you think about it.. how many boats hang on the water during storms? How many golfers do you see on the golf course during a thunderstorm? You dont. That pretty much tells me whomever stays out there at least has a some small chance of getting struck.
I dont feel that unsafe anymore on the Minnesota river because it is in fact a small riverway and most everything around me is much higher… But that isnt going to stop a tree from falling on me if I have the boat beached, or ducking under one to dodge hail.
Last night I launched out of the Cedar ave access off Blackdog road. I came from 35W and it only took seconds to notice there were trees and large limbs EVERYWHERE. There was lots of new logs and debris floating down the river last night, the trek back to the access was very slow due to large logs in the water.. all with green leaves. The area got hammered by the storm. If anyone was fishing Black Dog the contest night… I am sure they got quite the show and went running for cover at some point in time(if there was anywhere to go?) The lights on the Cedar Ave bridge were not on last night.. The access was dark. I assume the power is still out from the storm damage. It appeared the road may not have been passable as many large trees and brush were cleared from the road.
I am glad I wasnt in that direct area when it hit! I dont think I would have needed to be struck.. I would have probably had a heart attack with all the falling trees and flying limbs!
All of that damage happened during the Friday night- Saturday morning storm. It was like that when we went to the Cedar launch Saturday night. Not sure when the power went on on the bridge, and general area. They did have alot of power outages Saturday morning. That was one of the first things I noticed when coming up to the launch on the way in, the total lack of light in that area.
In spite of the inherent dangers it sure was nice to get some rain…
Bring it on I would love to see a couple more feet of water in the rivers right now.
This rain dance worked last year-we’ll see if it works again-
and just for good measure I’ll
a few times to the rain gods
What’s better…30 mph trying to out run lightening (that’s cracking so loud it makes you jump with the motor at WOT)…or sitting out the lightening of a storm overhead.
I’ll wait for Hanson’s response…

Watching it out of my truck window
Not sure who those BP cat league guys are. And there were more than 4 flats caught. We had seven in our boat with the top three all over 15lbs. Dtro had nothing to do with us fishing “your spot”. We went from shakopee to chaska and back down past vallyfair. That spot looked obvious because of depth cover and fresh inflowing water. We also fished a spot after you guys left it and caught a flat and big channel there as well. Thats why its fishing, they can show up and bite almost anywhere at any time.

A tip of the hat on all the Flats. I know you guys put in a long one that night. Would have loved to hear the stories at Bobs the next day but I know its a jaunt for you guys. You covered alot of water that night and it paid off.
Spots…. Whose and Whats….. The river is the river. Plenty of room for all.
Glad you guys were in.

Hey, back off a bit. It’s working a little too well!
Ok tough guys, get out there tonight. You could probably nab a 80# record flat with these storms!

I was just kidding Ed we had our chance at that spot and passed on it for starters.
Kyle’s boat looks and sounds awesome coming down the river at those High speeds after dark with those dual head beems, sure makes getting from spot to spot a lot eaiser/faster.
Great job and nice talking to you guys…
