It sure has been quiet around here. What gives? Full moon making fishing tough or are you guys just sick of posting about the 30#+ flatheads?

It’s been pretty slow fishing and posting every where as of the last few days.

I think flathead fishing historically slows down from here on out, some will say there will be a fall bite on flats but I have not expierenced this the last 2 years.

I’m predicting a 15 lb flat gets you in the money on the 11th and hopefully its me…

I think the catfish gods are punishing the cat people for expressing interest in a GTG and then not signing up. I will be sure to post pics of all the big fish you didn’t catch.

My air conditioner is out….Looks like I’ll have to get a new unit…just because the fan motor isn’t made anymore.

However, we caught a 10 lbs channel last night on the super secret bait I’ve been working on.

So far, I’ve been using one rod with this bait and the other three with bullys. Two fish caught out of three nights trying. One 14 lbs channel and a 10 pounder. Just a little more testing to be done.

I did get my best channel of the year friday night because I found a gentleman to talk to and I stayed later than I would have by myself. Just short of 10# but I haven’t seen many big ones this year.

This time of year is the worst in relation to all of the nutjobs being out in the evening. Low water makes it hard to get around because there is no “main channel” here. Is the MN river boatable year round?

Well… it happens, what can I say.

Actually we sat through a couple hours of rain last week before this one bit. Guess it was worth it. Secret bait strikes again!

The MN river was hot last Fri night. With 2 flats boated at 22lbs and 20lbs. I know of 3 others that night were over 30lbs with the largest at 39lbs.

I’m right on track, same as last year.
It will take much bigger than 15lbs to win on the 11th.
Pier…. you smell a side bet.
I’ll bet Flaco651 and Riverhog will want in on some action.

Pretty sure Riverhog will not be catching the winning fish since last I heard he wasn’t participating dew to family commitments.

Plus Hanson, and Waste are now officially retired from the Moore’s contest ” ” and when I was in there yesterday only 4 guys were signed up….

Wasn’t the winner last year from the MN river too? It seems like late summer is better there? Or not?

Hey guys, hijacking threads is my cache.

So I take it that guys are doing ok, but just haven’t been posting, thus “the dog days of posting”?

I might sit on the shore Sunday evening. In the meantime, I am fishing lake locked fish this weekend.

I’m waiting for the air conditioner guy…so I thought I would tell my little last night story.

My neighbor has wanted to go out for a long while…finally last night we made it happen. We were going to be doing some searching new areas…and I promised nothing except a nice night on the river…and to be back by midnight. I wanted to get an early start on removing the old air unit.

So…first stop was by a cement wall. I said we’re going to drift as close to the wall as we could without breaking my rod. Now, he’s a very very experiance walleye guy and general fisherman, so I was comfortable with him haveing the rod tip next to the wall. He got snagged a couple times…I backed up…and the hook came out of the rocks.

I didn’t mention that we were using my secret bait…test batch #3 (three days old)

So…he snagged up again…and I started to back up…then noticed the line looked like it was at a differant angle to the boat than it was before. Kevin, I said. Are you sure it’s a snag? Yanking the rod in the air several times…he says..yup…snagged. I wasn’t watching too closely and repositioned the boat and this time I was sure the line was in a differant location…Kevin…there’s a fish on there. No…it’s just a bad snag. Ok then..I think we need to break it off…here’s the stick. Wrap it around the line 10 times and I’ll move the boat away. As I start moving the boat away…

    BRIAN!!! IT’S A BIG #$%$$$@%@$ FISH! #@#@@#! #@$#@#% NO#@$#! IT MUST BE @#$#@$$# HUGE!

Sure nuff…using the boat woke the big guy up and Kevin had a 30 second fight until the hook came out…Not bent…just came out.

Moral of the story…Never trust a walleye guy.

Now I’m not trying to cast doubt on your credibility but this isn’t a ploy to increase interest in your “SECRET” catfish bait, is it? This whole “SECRET” bait thing is getting dragged out just enough to make me smell a BrianK marketing strategy. I’m starting to think something smells and it isn’t just your “SECRET” bait.

Well, I ‘spose one could think that.

There are a few that have been sworn to keep there mouths shut…and others that have been blind folded…not that this helped much…

Just need a couple more times out with it before I can say it’s working….any better or worse that other things we’ve been using.

    Full moon making fishing tough

I don’t think we can blame the full moon for this past weekends CONTINUED slow “big” Flathead fishing results.

Slightly off topic but I wonder how big a Flathead it would have took to be in the money in the Moore’s contest if it were held this past weekend….

I’m fully convinced that the moon plays a role. Not sure what that role is, but too many times you can count on getting a hit during moon rise/set. I wouldn’t say that full moon is any tougher though, because I’ve had good full moon nights.
IMO,the bite is cyclical and also attributed to the barometric pressure.

Mark my words…..if Sat night’s weather is similar to today’s with warm/overcast yet stable, or better yet, an approaching front, big fish will be caught and it will take at least a 20lb fish to take first and more than likely a 30 will be needed.

I think Larry and I just might switch gears and try a new stretch altogether, just to spice it up a bit.

I believe the Moon plays a role also I have had limited success during the full moon phase for sure, like you said weather and I’ll add time of year are contributing factors also.

So a 15lb Flat for second isn’t all that outrages of a prediction?

    I think that it’s a good start

Time of the year is a funny thing. While it does play a factor, the fish are still eating, the bite doesn’t shut off entirely (except for maybe during full spawn mode or wintering). It may slow down, but you need to adjust. That may mean fishing strictly cutbait, or fishing during the morning or even midday, or using a float, or fishing really shallow (you getting all these ).

I think it’s too easy to play the blame game.

All you can do is try to come up with a pattern and roll with it. I rarely just sit in the boat and wait for a clicker, I’m always thinking about what I could be doing differently or why I’m getting fish at this spot.

Hanson and I were at a spot last night that I guarantee held fish, lots of fish and big fish. Either they had lockjaw, or we fished it wrong. I will give it a couple more times fished as is, and then switch it up, but still fish the same general area.

That’s interesting Dtro. I can’t find any corolation between preasure and a flat bite. I’ve been watching it all summer.

Now I was a firm believer in the full moon night being tough…we stuck a 37 the last full moon.

I’m going to stick with the best time to fish is when you can…

I’ve heard the flow is so slow that the water’s moving UP the MN…any truth to that??

When there is a lil’ wind your boat will actually go up stream on the MN right now.
