For you guys who have used both for flathead bait, which do you preferre? Unfortunatly, I am in MN and are not allowed to use Sunnies for bait, but am just curious which the flatheads bite better…….? Opinions?

I fish with sunny’s all the time because it is what I have access to and legal in Wisconsin. I really wished I could have both along each night not limiting me to WI. side of the boarder. Also while spending one evening with BrianK I noticed the bully’s to be much more active than the sunny’s.
With that said, I personally do not believe nor have I been convinced that one bait is better than the other. There have been some good sized fish caught on both year after year. If they sold bully’s in WI. I would have a cooler full along with my gills for verity!

I’ve used both and don’t see either one as “better” than the other.

Bullheads are much more lively on the hook and are a lot easier to keep alive.

I am using bluegills this year because my bullhead pond seems to have died out.

If I could buy bullheads at a baitshop, that is all I would use.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have both options? I don’t know how many MN guys have tried chubs or suckers this year. Sometimes it seems like even using different bait at certain times of the year can mean the difference between 0 fish and a multi-fish night.

I don’t want to hijack, but I am curious if you Sconis boys know if sunfish are good for pike in lakes? I’d be giddy if O could use perch for pike. I assume that sunfish are legal to use for pike and not just rivers and/or cats?

I’ve caught a few pike on sunnies – my dad keeps a pole rigged with a big bobber in the boat for just that purpose. When we’re fishing for a meal of sunnies, he’ll put a little one out on the big bobber. Works pretty well at times.

Bulls and bluegills are about equal for most of the year. When/if you fish colder water, bluegills are much better. Bullheads don’t work at all for me in the fall.

I started the season off exclusively using bullheads. Since the beginning of July I try to bring both creek chub and bullies on my outings. It seems to me it varies from night to night which bait they prefer. One thing I like about chub is that it makes excellent cut bait after they die.

I have. Wish I had time to nab some chubs before fishing.

Much to my surprize!!!! The bullheads are still putting fish in the boat for me. (Even as of Last night) Before this season I probably would have told you to go put the bullheads where the sun don’t shine. I couldn’t catch anything with them last year…. I’ve been made a believer \

I know that chubs are not doing squat at this time…. I’ve talked with guys who fished with them all weekend, and hardly anything to show for it.
Suckers, cut………. Seem to be producing…… though not what most are expecting…..
Cmon guys if this was easy everyone would be doing it.

I’m with RB on this one….gotta go with bulls. We use a lot of bulls down here in NE & they do rather well. All our bigger fish come on bulls. Gills & sunnies do all right, but some nights it’s all I can do to keep em alive. They just don’t seem to produce the bigger fish, either. I would take a big goldy or big chub over a gill most days. Chubs have been real hard to get down here too. Of course, what the bait shop calls a chub, I call a big minnow, that’s all they are. I also like to use waterdogs on occasion. Flatheads love em! In fact, I’m going to go pick up 30 of em right now!

I met a guy the other day that says dogfish are the best flathead bait. He says he traps them in some slough.

I also heard dog poo works well too. Why don’t you guys try it; Experiment with it and get back to me.
