I think you’ll find that the bite starts in may has a slow point during the spawn in June and then steady until Sept. Channels will spawn earlier than flatties will and that far north, the bite is probably toward the end of may. Time on the water will tell you how your water is. I don’t not fish in June you just have to take the spawn into account.

I first started catching them (channels) this year in March, as soon as there was a hole in the ice big enough to cast into. I suspect that they were there, and hungry, long before that.

It’s more a question of where they are at certain times of the year, and what they’re eating.

As for flatties, I’ll let someone else cover that. There’s a whole bunch of info in the past posts to get you started. Good luck.

Channels seem to work as early as you can get out there. Right now they are biting hard, although I have not been out after this big rain we had. But we have been getting our biggest right before night, 8-9pm on cut. Action slows usually after 11pm and picks up again few hours later.

I second that I had 8 runs on cut bait in less than 1 hour. just before dark!

I really like to fish when I can.

You know what they say, you can’t catch them, if you are not there. GET OUT AND FISH

Early spring for the channels, and now can be a excellent that the fish seem to be recovered from the spawn.

Flatheads are best for me from mid May to late June, and then steady action after th spawn which is usually close to late uly when they realy get into feeding again. The most consistant action happens earlier in the year.

Its gonna be great. Hopefully somebody will have a chance.

We had good luck fishing shallow dead water adjacent to a very deep hole. A feeder creek was also kicking out a small amount of water. There were baitfish everywhere out there!

Dead water? Was there a seam nearby or current moving over the deep hole?

So the creek was creating a seam? Forgive me, I have ADD.

ANYWHERE you find some baitfish activity right now is a good place to start! All of my betternights in the last few weeks have had activity going on around the boat. The baitfish are doing some strange things lately.. here one day, gone the next.

Sorry Pug! I thought you said ‘stream’, not ‘seam’. Yeah, there was a good current seam and where the stream flowed out and met the current there was a good eddy. You can see a picture of it in my report from earlier this week in this forum!

    Cheers!
