Stinkbait hooking?

Ok, last couple of days I have been out channel cating due to tranny failure and can’t get my boat out, so I have been joining a few river buds and give them cats a few trys. I am familiar with the cut bait but how do you guys hook/use stink bait? One of the buddys I fish with uses a decent size foam(sponge?) cutout and dips it filled with stink then follows with a left over slice of sucker (piece that you dont’ really use after you chop it up.) I still think cut is better since we have caught more on the cut than the stink. Just wondering how you guys hook that stuff up, and if you even avoid touching it (ha!). I’m regarding to that sonny stuff, the black stuff, original? I believe. I’ve seen them treble hooks sleaved with a plastic lining but the hooks seem so small. Thinking about trying it, but trying to avoid touching it also.

Don’t want to touch it eh? Afraid that all your friends will call you stink-finger?

Egg worms pre-rigged on trebles work well, a sponge, or even a small square of the old school white cotton dish towel, with a tiny hole cut in the center for the treble to go through when you tie up (make sure you cover both sides). As far as keeping the fingers clean, try popsicle sticks, cheap, clean, and sturdy for pushing your set-up into the paste.

I use pre rigged surgical tubing worms. You can find them almost anywhere they sell the stuff. I replace the line they give you with 30lb big cat. I buy a bucket of Sonny’s and push the tube down into it with a stick and then lift it out by the line. No need to ever touch it, although at night you tend to get some on you and your boat and your rigs and your partner if they are too close. Keep away from carpet. My boat always has a few towels in there and some pumice orange no water hand cleaner does the trick.

    Oh Big Dan,

Sonny’s doesn’t smell half as bad as musky slime.

I was looking at them surgical tubes, just thought the treble was awfully small campared to the cirlehooks. Probably pick some up. Will only depend on the stink when I can’t make it too the baitshop. Saturday night my bud who brought along the stink bait oppsy’d after catching a small cat and was hurrying to get his rig back in the water when he grabbed the wrong end of the stick, if you know what i mean. He washed his fingers over and over that night and man did I feel sorry for him. Ha! Yea right. Acouple of beers the laughters took off!

Those tubes usually come with trebles, but you can put a circle hook on instead if you’re concerned about hook size.

If you look at the post titled Whiskermom’s personal best. That big cat came on one of those flimsy trebles. I find my hookup percentage goes down when I try to substitute circles. I fish with bobbers most of the time. I have harmed one cat in 6 years of doing this and it was tasty.

    Cabela’s carries it
Lntony and I were in the Cabela’s in Prairie Du Chein the other day and I spotted the Sonny’s on the shelf. While Tony was looking at trolling rods I picked up a bucket of the stink and snuck up behind Tony. Then I opened up the container just a little bit Let me tell you, that stuff has some SNORT
I thought it smelled pretty good myself, too bad Tony didn’t think so

    Foldgers plastic coffee cans!

I get the small jar of Sonny’s from Everts..and I know that Bob Moore’s Bait in Mpls carries it too. I don’t go through the tub size in a year…even if I did, the jar size is easy to handle.

One teaspoon (reusable and can be wiped off)…an towel and the jar of bait all fit nicely in the coffee can.

(I store it in the FW’s closet when not in use….)
