A while back someone posted that they were catching more flats this year during the daylight hours.

Last year all the larger fish (40 through 58 pounds) can at night…most between midnight and 1 am…

This year most of the larger fish have come from 8 to 9:30 pm.

    What’s up with that??

    Anyone else notice this too?

    PS I’m not complaining!

My partner used to be a flatheader untill he discovered muskies. He took most his big fish ( 50#+) during the day. 54 and a 67 back to back days at 11am and 2 pm repectively.

I wish I could figure out a daylight pattern for each season (early, pre-spawn, spawn….etc.) because that would make my life easier. When the moon is full though, I do tend to get out earlier. I just need to get more time on the water.

95 degrees right now and a heat index of 100 degrees… I’ll stick to fishing the night for now!

In reality,I hav got a good percentage of my fish in the daylight this year. I tink the number of fish coming in the daylight is directly contributed to pressure… many people are heading out earlier to fish in many areas to assure they get their preferred spot for the sundown bite… Or, people are gettng their line in the water earlier.

I havent fished for flatheads much in the noon hour, but for the few times I have, I have caught fish more often than not. I have always had(on the average) very good luck in the early morning hours, but its hard to motivate to wake up at 3 am to launch on a dark river!

I’m not sure about that Dave…although I know the MN River has seen more pressure this year…or maybe just more reporting.

This is my 3rd year of fishing the same areas, starting to fish at the same time. I’ve seen 2x the pressure here…as I’ve seen a total of 4 boats in these same areas, which is two more than last year.

I was thinking of fishing with the eagles…but they have big beaks and larger talons…

This subject was the topic du jour last night in the catcraft.

First of all, like Dave said…..you can have it. It’s bad enough sitting out there in 80 degrees with no sun

I really believe “something” happens during this July time frame, whether it’s spawn or oxygen related (I had 83 degree water temp last night). The fish act differently. The bite is different.
Every year you hear of people doing better in the early morning or even daylight hours around this time frame.

It’s not unheard of to target these daylight biters and guys have managed 20 fish days by snag jumping.

I’ll stick to the cooler nights and refreshing drinks instead of pulling anchors every 15 minutes in the 100 degree heat.

I see some cooler days coming this week.

I agree those hot days are killers. Even if there is a wind and you feel relatively comfortable, you’ll be exhausted from the moment you come in until a couple of days have passed. However a low 80 – upper 70 degree day with low humidity would make for some fun daytime fishing.

ps. Since moving in with the GF I have been on a bedtime schedule of about 9:30-10:30. Before that I could stay out until 2am before getting tired. Now I hit a wall at midnight.

I said that’s my bed time, not when I go to sleep.

    No what I mean?

    Ohhhhh Mate!!!
your timeing was way off. You should have shacked up in November. Got it all out of your system by the following May and then you would be back on Flat time.

We’ve been shacked up since August! Truth be told, we might as well be married (If what they say is true).

Alright, let’s get back on topic here! The other part is I think she’d be more willing to go cat fishing if it wasn’t a nocturnal activity. Although I get that too, most guys catfish as an excuse to get away from the GF!
