I am not a tournament guy but I always keep track of who outfishes who in the boat I am in. Last night I took my mom out who likes to fish but doesn’t go enough. Last night I introduced her to Lake Mendota catfishing. She had caught a few skinny river cats but her first fish was her personal best.

Then a few minutes later she shattered that personal best by 10 freaking pounds. My mother thoroughly outfished me last night. I think she might be back for more of this.
July 7, 2007 at 12:42 pm #587589This is another shot of me trying to show her how to hold it. Notice my mom doesn’t wear gloves like some of you Nancy boys.

am calling my shot. Tonight I am taking out my mother with the hope of getting a good picture for my wall of fame. I predict the 20lbers are on tonight as the heat jumped 10 degrees and the humidity is way up. That was the key last year to an unbelievable tear.
So…I figure you should have 12 ozs to play with on either side of 20….what’s the official weight?
This kinda reminds me of the Johhny Carson skit…whatever the Pychic’s name was that held the envelope to his forehead??
Whatever it weighed…It’s great to share a passion with Mom’s!
July 7, 2007 at 12:53 pm #587591Someone once said that Sonny’s Super Sticky is a small fish bait. I haven’t seen any small fish (under 4#) this year yet. The big one went 19 pounds 7 oz. It isn’t a 54 pound river flattie, but I figure if I get a few of these the nights not wasted. It was kind of funny as she mentioned on the hookset that she didn’t think the second one was bigger. Then it saw the boat and took off like a shot. It was a slow night over all. We only had 3 bites but ended up just short of 40#s of fish. 19.5, 9, and an 8.
July 7, 2007 at 1:01 pm #587593Great read and picture
Congrats on that fish Whiskermom
Looks like your still schooling that boy
July 7, 2007 at 1:19 pm #587597thanks Bret. Your never too old to get schooled by mom. It doesn’t take a Psychic here. It did take patience though. We sat on that spot from 8 until 10 with no bites. If you know it is a good spot, it pays to wait sometimes.
July 7, 2007 at 1:27 pm #587598way to go them are some nice fish.i agree sonnys does catch big ones
July 7, 2007 at 1:58 pm #587603I bet that was a great night on the water. Would could be better than taking mom out catfishing?

Nice Fish. It is great to get people on big fish. Congrats
July 9, 2007 at 1:14 pm #588134Wow – that 2nd picture may be one of the toughest looking channels I have ever seen!
Congrats on the two PBs!
July 9, 2007 at 2:22 pm #588163Brent,
You are absolutely correct. I enjoy the teaching and seeing the smiles when the big one comes. I have caught several bigger than that one the last few years but I will remember that one for the rest of my life. Spend quality time with your parents, and kids. Every trip is precious. That was one bad fish. I don’t think she would move over for the biggest musky in the lake.

I don’t know about you, but I seem to get just as excited to see someone else catch a big fish in my boat
The problem is lately that has not been hapening
July 9, 2007 at 3:19 pm #588195come on Brent. That big sturgeon and flattie already made your year.

Ain’t that the truth! That’s an attribute of true fishermen; Just enjoying any fish brought to the boat whether you reel it in or someone in the boat.July 9, 2007 at 6:07 pm #588283Quote:

You know how it is, the laws of diminished returns
A guy is very happy catching a 7 lb fish when he starts, but then it has to be 8 lbs, and all the sudden he doesn’t get too excited about a 30 lber, it should have been 40 It always has to be bigger and better then the one before it. I know there is a 67 ” sturgeon out there with my name on it I guess I can’t really complain, but I know that stupid 50 lb flat was looking at me funny last weekend
The same reason I can’t fish for Bass, just no challenge there and who would want a small fish that doesn’t fight well
