Last night Chris and I pushed up stream on the Minnesota a little further than we have before. We came across a promising spot that had a sense of familiarity about. As if I had dreamt it or transcendentally visited it.

Something caught my eye on a log extending over the water from the bank. I was horrified! It appeared that a bullhead had taken his own life. His lifeless body was dangling in the cool breeze as a piece of Power Pro was clutched around it’s gills. I started to wonder how bad did this bullhead’s life have to be to that he would throw it away?

It was at that moment I realized that he hadn’t taken his life after all. He was the victim of a snagged leader and descending water levels.

So if you spool with green Power Pro with about an 8/0 Gamakatsu, I have it and PM me if you want it back. If I don’t hear from anyone within a week, I am giving the bullhead to the dogs for they love jerky.

If you haven’t figured it out, we were blanked last night. I wish we brought some cut bait though, as some of the bullheads came back beat to heck or with sandpaper marks.

WWG, were you out using that 10 footer to kill bullies on the big log again? Whack — “oh, I think I’m going to need another bullie after that hit”. Sometimes after they thump hard into a log they can only swim circles to the left. I think that’s the WWG secret formula for big fish, whack the bait into a log first!

I accidentally dropped a bullie in the driveway and didn’t see it the other day. It dried up overnight and by morning my wife was less than impressed to see it when she got the newspaper off the driveway. My dog had just eaten breakfast. Well, he thought the bullie would make great dessert. Chomped it down, everything was just peachy…well sure enough, 5 minutes later he yaked up his whole breakfast into 2 piles on the front lawn. He’s a hoser.

Pug…I hate to be the one to tell you but that’s a set up for “suspending flatheads”. You need to brush up on your fishing tactics.

That’s some serious vertical jigging. Kind of reminds me of when they dangle a piece of chicken for the gators to eat. I suppose only the big ones will come out of the water for it. No wonder you guys catch all big ones. You keep these secrets from me.

As soon as the GF is away, I am putting a bully in the dogs pool. Tuffy the Pug won’t care, but i am guessing it would keep Athena the pom busy for hours. She already tries snatching the bullies from my hands. Pictures possibly to come when it happens.

With that setup, you will be ready for when the water does come back up!

I think fishing that way is considered a set line, isn’t it?

I don’t know what you guys are talking about or even where that spot is.

Well promising turned into frustrating as we had no runs after sitting there through prime time. I am begining to think that someone put that there purposely as a diversion.

I know that the river is getting pretty skinny. Won’t be any big boats in there very much longer. I think I know where that spot is….and the last time I went over that way, I had a few too many close calls with logs that come up out of 6 feet and show on the graph as only a foot below me……

I am sure we will here of someone losing a motor through there pretty soon.

I know where that rig came from… I have fished there quite a bit this year. Once in a while the spot puts out, but its spotty.

I cant agree with wwg more… those logs are getting close under the surface! There are some stretches with about 6′ of water and my graph has showed MANY logs coming up to within a foot of the boat. Its only a matter of time before the lower unit(or hull) takes a direct shot. I have been cringing a bit more each time out, and will not be heading out in the area pretty soon unless I lighten up the boat to draft a bit less water.

We also passed a few floaters that were the size that you want to run into open throttle. One had to be about 30′ long going right down the center of the river.

I think next time I have to speak up and tell Chris to not go full throttle after dark. It’s one thing during the day, but a little scary when I am trusting his night vision! He gave up on the spot light because I get distracted real easy and blinded him a couple times checking out the shoreline. But after nearly running us into one of those green buoys during the last tourney, I thought he might have learned his lesson.

Anyone running that river WOT right now is crazy! That water is dropping fast and new hazards are showing up all the time! I came across some nasty floaters on a scouting trip in the ealry morning the other day too.

Slow down or there are going to be some new horror stories coming up soon! Anything faster than a slow plane(10 mph) is nuts(MN river), 5 mph is more reasonable unless you know exactly where every snag is.

Yes… sitting sideways against a log jam is where I want to be with an in-operable lower unit! The current will keep pushing on the side of the boat possibly pushing it under the snag.. Or worse yet, getting thrown from the boat and floating into that log jam with, or without a life jacket.

Somebody on the forum here(not giving names) hit a small tree overhanging the river at higher speeds and it exploded.. part of the tree flew over the boat and narrowly missed a passenger… then broke half the cat rods standing up in the rod holder clean.

I have put nasty dents in the boat in the past and caught some air on a few occasions.. I learned the hard way to slow down.

” This is exactly why I am very selective who I will ride with on ANY river at night, Im not willing to risk my life for any fish. “
