I left Everts with two customers tonight. It was thier first time catting. A father son team…the son gave his Dad a catten trip for fathers day. Both said they’ve been looking forward to the trip for months.

Since I had a change of location plans we arrived at our A spot early and set up. Shortly, a red lund tiller with two fellas and little dog come motoring up. I thought they were walleye guys heading home for the evening. When they were boat side…I greeted them, noticed the heavier than walleye gear and asked if they were going catten. They said yes with what I thought was a freindly smile and kept going.

Once they were well past us, one hollard…”Stay the f#$% out of my spot!”

Truely great sportsmen. What a great experiance for a father/son team that wanted to enjoy the evening experiancing thier first night on the sippi.

I tip my hat to the two in the boat. Notice I didn’t call them catfisherman?

Guys, I’ve been fighting with my inner self this week trying to not go out. I know I won’t catch anything and the inner tubers will be out in force. Since it has gotten nice and warm at night, I’ve been running into drunks and people who tell me their prison stories! I think the people contribute to my second half of the season burnout.

They were lying to you Brian. I bought that spot along with some other swamp land. It was a great deal…. You can use MY spot any time you want.

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant encounter Brian. The only thing we can do in that situation is what you did. Stay cool and don’t react to their level of immaturity. We sincerely need to feel sorry for these types of individuals and pity them. To do something like that they must really live miserable lives.

You guys need to do like we do on the MN river and start a spot sign up sheet.
Its funny how little dogs make people feel tough. Was it small enough to be a cat snack?

In all reality… I could see someone yelling that out(in a sarchastic tone) if someone traveled to the spot and was surprised to find someone there…. as a joking jesture, not as a serious command. I tell people(always know them) to “get out of my spot” very frequently this year.

Unfortunately, there are lots of people out there that seem to think they own the water, and will disrespect anyone sitting in “their spot”. I have had boats anchor over, or near my lines more than once… Sometimes I keep calm and blow it off, other times I do get quite outspoken and offensve(depends how many occupants and size of other boat )

The best thing anyone can do is keep a level head and do whatever it takes to keep the situation calm and avoid boat-rage. A confrontation is going to ruin your day on the water…

If someone told me that a spot was theirs and caused issues… I would mke it a point to share that exact spot with others that would use it regularly.

I hear you Dave…but with the f bomb and them being so far away…even if they were joking…it wasn’t funny. I don’t deserve any credit for keeping cool…they were too far away for me to do anything (it would have been pointless to reply to them anyway). I just explained to my clients that like any fishing…or anything for that matter, there are selfish turds out there.

On the other hand…I know some stand up cat fisherman too…
It wasn’t too long ago when I was guiding a friend of mine, his cousin and his brother. Too many people for my boat, so we took two boats out. Just happened that there were two other boats in the same area. This was a location where I’ve only seen one other boat all year… We could see each other…we all caught fish…we were all friendly.

So…if you see a red lund 14 footer out there with ugly sticks and close faced spinning reels on them…something like a Zebco 808…and a Yorky dog like he above. Smile and ask them if you are in their spot as they are not marked and you could be the next person to tee them off.

Hmm you are a much nicer guy then I…. I’d have gps coordinates up by now. No I’m not kidding one bit.

I’d be watching for them again to grab the boat numbers, just incase.

If I see them I’ll pull up right next to them ask them how they are doing in my super secret spot my family has been fishing for 100 years

Overall I think my taste is a bit soured about “Sportmen and Fishermen” Honestly I think majority are scum, with little respect for other people like fellow sportmen/fishermen, and our lakess, rivers and fish. Rude people at boat landings, rude people on the lake, I try and only fish the week day which works good for me, and I run into less idiots, but I still get more than enough. I also cringe at those who catch and keep everything, there is no concept of conservation with these people, yet you’ll hear them tell you how great it once was, how they used to be able to keep limits of 10 inch sunfish… No concept what so ever of the bigger picture of things. Not that I’m condeming anyone for keeping fish, as long as you are within the legal spectum.

My personal favorites are those I run into on Pool 2 that complain the quailty of fishing is poor now, because of those internet forums, giving out all the secrets Yup lots of good reasons to be super tight lipped about a catch and release body of water Now everyone knows about the secret wing dams….

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the sky is falling, and such, I just don’t have anytime for rude or inconsiderate people, if it weren’t for what I call the real sportmen, the ones willing to share some tips, I’d catch a whole lot less fish. Thank god there are still true sportmen out there still and every once in a while I get a chance to talk to one either at a landing or on a lake, but of course I can always find them here.

If you’re done whining now, could you tell us if there were any fish in his spot?

I’m taking that you ran out of crackers to go along with my whine??

It was the first time I fished “that” spot early…if I get to it, it’s always around midnight so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

We had 5 runs there. Three misses on little fish…one 10 lbser to the boat and then one good fish miss. Since all the misses came back with the bullhead on the hook…although the bh was “re hooked”, I’m guessing the hook set wasn’t hard enough to make it into the cat.

We had one other “good fish” hit…and the freshly tied Power Pro leader snapped.

…and you thought I was done whining!

Well brian couldn’t you smell thier scent? I mean I’m sure these Yahoos marked thier spot. probably fought the dog over markings.

Gotta love the guys who get tougher the further away they get.

    Thought I would update this…

Can’t tell for sure…but on Friday night a friend and his son were fishing the same area these guys came from. They reeled in a brand spanking new Ugly Stick with a closed faced reel attached.

What are the chances my ol’ friends in the red Lund lost a rod???
