I have a problem that maybe you guys can help me with! My mainline keeps breaking on hookset and i dont know why?80lbs pp to a 60lbs swivel. Then 30lbs mono leader to the hook. oh and a 3 oz no roll with 2 beads above swivel. Trilene knots. The line appears to be in strands right at breakng point some long some short during hokset it feels like im pulling the bait out of there mouth only tobring back nothing!

It sounds like you got a bad spool of line? I know for a fact the trilene knot is not a good knot for power pro.. maybe your knots are slipping and causing the fraying?

Try polamer knots, heavier swivel, and get rid of the mono leader. Tie a rig and hook it off to a scale and see what it takes to break it.

Sounds like Dave hit on the head and I also heard there was some fake PP being sold awhile back. .If it was me I would respool with new line and use the knott said.
I also use PP (10lb-80lb) and never had problem with it breaking.
    Hope this helps

I’d say you’ve got some bad line.

I just used my float rod, up on the Red, to catch about 100 channel cats from 20 to 30 pounds in 3 feet of water above a very rocky bottom. Big fish in harsh conditions for line.

3 years ago I spooled my float rod setup with 65# Power Pro. I haven’t changed the line since and I never had any problems with it this year.

I agree with Dave. Change your line. I just got started up here fishing cats but was using 30lbs. fire line which I use fishing Northern Pike (5 to 10lbs). Dave and Larry got me set straight on that and I got a new reel and spooled some 80lb PowerPro and haven’t had a problem since. The guys here are full of good info!

Can’t say anything else I guess! Get a new spool of line, and maybe return the leftovers you still got to PP, could be worth a free spool of line or two.

I’ve had the same problem in the past, with SpiderWire, and on seperate occasions. I wouldn’t buy that stuff again…EVER!

There is no chance in hell anyone could set the hook hard enough to break 80lb Power Pro, unless your knots are slipping very easily. Palomar Knot and super glue!!

happened again last night but i noticed something the fish im loosing are in tight to cover i let the one run for a few more seconds then usual and im thinking there holding behind the cover . my bait is placed on upside of the cover and they are pulling back into the cover before heading cross current thinking they are running me through the tree and thats whats breaking my line not sure though. Also landed one that did this and felt fish pull thourgh the cover before i landed him.what do you guys think about locking the rod down in the rod holder???

Had the same problem last weekend. Next time i’ll fish the reel in gear and whack ’em right away!

Braid is very strong, but like anything…you get it around sharp rocks, or sharp wood…it will get cut.

Every fish I hung up in the wood, it took all the effort I could dig up to break the 65lb PP I use. I lost 3 one night cuz I let them get too far into the cover. THAT won’t happen again!

If you’re fishing the same piece of structure…there could be something in there that has a sharp edge…maybe a piece of fence or barbed wire…or some trash along those lines.
