    Humminbird Side Imaging

I met a guy at the boat ramp with a Humminbird Side Imaging unit. I couldn’t see it work since his boat was already on the trailer, but the way he described it made me think it would be perfect for getting a good look at submerged catfish cover. Just like looking at black and white pictures he said.

I’ve always wondered if the cover that looked the best above the water was really the best underwater.

Anybody know anything about these units?

I wish I had $1,000 burning a hole in my pocket. That almost seems like an unfair advantage. I saw some pictures some where that someone took with a side view graph of the pump house on Centerville. I don’t know what it is but I had a hard time understanding it, although the ones you find following the link seem pretty clear.

Never mind. I watched the video and I get it now. I didn’t get it because I was perceiving as a real time picture like an underwater camera. When you throw in the variable that the boat is moving and the screen is moving like a graph, it makes sense. That would really be a big help. I wonder if there is any degradation from current or slopes in a river.

I must admit that I have one At first it sucks…then you learn to read it the more you use it and they are usefull. I have found things that I never would have tried out and done well. My father and I got last years model and wish we had forked over the extra $500 for the newer one. BUt they are a great tool but you need to take the time and patience to run them there is a lot to learn. I am on the croix a lot and at night it is great to boat through areas using it to stay away from shore in the complete dark. On the downside they are a lot of $$$$$$…but hey it wasn’t my money

I got one too. It’s nice for finding new spots.

I have the 797C2Si it really does take a while to get used to reading the side imaging. I still don`t have it all down as to what I am seeing exactly. I really like the way I can scroll on an object off the side and drop a waypoint, or enlarge that area for a better look. Easier then dirt to find fish cribs or structure and mark them.

Current nor algae in the water bothers the side imaging part. I just wish I would of had the bucks to buy the bigger screen. With my ageing eyes the 797 is a little tough to make out fine detail unless I get really close to it.

I wouldn`y be without one now after having this one.

I would buy another one in a heart beat.
