What’s that smell?

Got home from work today to a stinky apartment. Then it dawned on me that I got home after Saturday evening’s trip and tossed my cooler in the corner to empty in the morning, along with a bag of frozen shad in it!!!

I normally have a pretty strong stomach, but I nearly lost my lunch emptying that sucker out!

I hear you ralph I forgot a bag after the Rainy trip in the livewell for a week and a half. I lost my lunch when I opened the livewell and it stunk for a few weeks.

Nothing will test a man’s fortatude as much as a dozen shad “working” in a warm spot.

Ah, the joy of forgotten bait. I had similar incident with crawlers this year. I had them tucked away in a room downstairs thinking it would be cool enough. It wasn’t. Some good came from it though. I am allowed to put bait in the fridge again, provided it is bagged properly.

Sounds like my two last fishing outtings which both times I left the minnow bucket in the back slashwell of my boat for a couple days as I forgot about it until I walked by the back of the boat. PEW!!! Don’t know why I bought them as I hardly used any of them on both trips out. I suppose I could of saved them for Briank since catfish ”love” stink bait so I’m told. I sure hope Briank will forgive me for getting rid of them. Thanks, Bill

Wouldn’t have been half as bad if it wasn’t in my apartment. Luckily, I discovered the source of the smell before my fiancee got home

Ryan – I can only imagine the horrors you endured. That stuff reeks even ‘fresh’ out of the bag.

I’m debating throwing the cooler away. I don’t know if it will ever be the same!!!

Fill the cooler with a mixture of bleach and water and let that sit for about 2 days. That will help immensely.

Maybe you can just convert the cooler to uses that do not involve the storing of food/beer products. Depending on the size, it might be worthwhile to make it into a bait bucket.

Sounds like the small cooler of shad I left in the back of my truck under the tonneau cover last summer for over a week. Yikes!

The shad no longer looked like fish but rather a soup with little white maggots crawling all over the place. That was SOME kind of odor! Sheeesh!

I bet is smells a little worse than the 8″ sucker that froze to the floor of my clam that I forgot about. realized that after our 1st few days in april during that little heat wave we had for that time of year. I stored the clam in my car just in case. got out of work one day opened the car and wondered why the car smelled like dead fish. for some reason the wife still refuses to ride in my car.

My minnow bucket tipped over in the Trailblaze…HEY! I thought I gotem all!

The FW tipped up the back seat in the spring…that was worth about two weeks of “the look”.

Bill, channels love that kind of stuff…but it’s hard to GET it on the hook…much less keep it there.

Bleach water solution and then add a box of baking soda then do the bleach solution again and it will be good as new

Yep, left a whole bait well full of fatheads, I looked all over in my garage for a couple of days trying to figure out what the heck that smell was. When I figured it out and opened the lid, WOW. Just about knocked me on my A**. Yuck, I used so much bleach, I didn’t think a minnow would survive in that bait well for a year.

I used to have my house boat in Desoto Bay. The owner was remiss in pumping the porta potties. They got to be pretty rancid and full and we complained. The next day he is down there with a pump trying to do the toilets as he couldn’t get the pump company to come and do it. Probably late on his bill I would guess. As he is getting started the hose parted after the pump unit and sprayed him and his helper with 4 weeks worth of putrid goo. We all laughed as he headed to the river for a dip in the extra clean water. The owner was a bit of a jerk and it was like punishment from above. The moral is always pay your poop pumper or you will wear it yourself.

Well, a soak in bleach and the cooler is back to smelling fresh! Lesson learned
