emb.. its really hard to visualize what you just said. What river are you fishing?

The best advice I can give is to find somewhere the baitfish are concentrating, and better yet, somewhere the baitfish are breaking the surface being chased by preditors.. those preditors are flathead food quite often.

“shallow silt sand bay with lots of timber near bank about 5 to 8 ft here then a drop on outside edge that leads to overhanging trees where drop off meets bank “

Is there any significant current bordering this *bay*? Is this on the inside, or outside of the “slight bend in the long strait stretch”?

Either way it could possibly be a very good spot if I translated it properly. The 1st place I always look is a current seam, or obvious significant structures that look to be prime ambush locatons.

“drop on outside edge that leads to overhanging trees where drop off meets bank” … Does this happen to be on the downstream side of this *bay*? I am guessing its likely where the main channel(current) is cutting out the bank on the “the slight bend”.

Either way, it sounds like a likely flathead holding area to me, and its worth trying to fish it. Fish along the current seams, and place baits ahead of obvious choice looking structures… fish the area well. If it doesnt produce, move on and try it for a period of time another evening. The fish will let you know befoe long if they are using it.

Yes Larry, it is true… but they CAN NOT be used in minnesota, but may be used on Minnesota/WI border waters by anyone holding a wisconsin license that doesnt reside in MN.. I suspect its the same for IA.. I have never looked at those regs.

Bluegills/Sunfish can not be beat for flatheads hands down… that also generally holds true for channel cats(cut sunfish), with the possible exception of comparing to shad in waters shad are present.

Keep in mind that was NOT a minnesota inland waters specifc answer… Most states allow panfish to be used for bait… catfish swim in more places than Minnesota waters.

Its up to whoever is fishing to check into their own state regulations. I would never suggest sunfish to anyone that I know is targeting fish in Minnesota.

    Hey Dave,
I’m not accusing you of this in any manner.
Its just that I had a very difficult time putting that post of Pierbridges in some sort of context. (Marc, thanks for the clarification) I know that he couldn’t include the link, but maybe a little better clarification of the nature of those questions would be in order…
though the posts following and the nature of this discussion would serve as that.

Im fishing the rock river in rockford ill.Yes the main channel runs right along the side of it its not a huge bay more of a flat that cuts slightly back into the bank.It is on the outside of a bend or curve in the river.there is a bigger bend up river with a deep hole its about 2000 yards up but lil or no structure present there.Yes the overhanging trees are on the down side of this bend.
