will this work for channels at all. if it does i’d like to give it a try as i have been catching a few of these and it’d be nice to have fresh caught bait to cut. also wanted to throw my first post into the new forum.

I’ve caught a few channels on it while sturgeon fishing.

sheepshead tends to get soft and won’t stay on the hook very well but it will work. Any fish will work. I prefer suckers for cutbait, but in a pinch it will do.

I’ve actually found it to be very tough if you fillet it and leave the skin and scales intact.

I’ll agree with Ryan there. I used some the other day. Left the skin on, and had a tough time getting it off the hook.

I really dig the belly meat on a sheepie for channels. Just rub it in the gut pile before throwing it out there!

I’ve used sheepies, cut bullies, smelt before, but I think redhorse works better.

I have no problem getting sturgeon on sheehead, but I dont get a lot of channels with them. I dont try them very often anymore either, no confidence.

I’m with Dave on the sheepie thing. I haven’t caught anything much on cut sheepshead
My favorite cut bait is fresh Mooneye!

From what I have read on the boards the last couple of years, that’s pretty much the opinion on sheepies. How about carp? Has anyone got experience using carp?

You cant use carp for bait in minnesota.. whole, or in pieces.

If you were to use carp, you would learn the guts work well for smaller channels, and the meat doesnt produce much. I tried them many times years ago.

As I was writing that, I kind of thought that I heard that before. I can see not using them live, but I don’t know the reason for not allowing cutbait. I can’t imagine it would be any better than sheephead though anyway.
