How many of you have read the Vokoun Dissertation?

The whole thing, word for word.

I tried that very thing tonight.

As much as I LOVE the flathead…..

I found myself hitting “next page” to try to find another graph or illustration.

Writing technical reports is part of my full time job, and I had a hard time following that.

So correct me if I’m wrong.

The bread and butter showed that after winter, the fish migrate in the early spring and set up to spawn, then there is another migration post spawn to set up in summer haunts then a short time of non-movement followed by another migration to a wintering hole.

Also the dissertation quantified the theory that a particular logjam or rootwad will hold (for the most part) one, two and and maybe three fish.

Maybe another night with a few adult beverages I’ll give it another shot

    Word for Word!

I wish I could sit that long!

(although I did print it off and put it in a three ring binder for a certain “sitting” room in the house.

I think you boiled it down well…but there’s a few other items worth noteing…

MOST of the good stuff is in the last few pages…just getting past “how” they did things eliminates the first third of the “book”.

Darren – I’ve read the whole thing and you pretty much summed up the key points. I think the overall study is valid at least for the St Croix. I am fairly certain that the St Croix flatheads migrate from upstream summer locations to either main lake wintering locations or possibly all the way to Pool 3 on the Mississippi River.

The trick to the puzzle is trying to take that information and put it in a timeline and an ambush plan for the current season. IMO the tricky piece of the puzzle is trying to figure out where are the prime wintering holes? If you can put a location on the wintering holes then you can make a timeline to find and follow fish as they migrate to their summer grounds. I know where I can catch big flatheads on the St Croix in July and August when they reach their summer grounds. The puzzle I am having is finding them after leaving the wintering holes and staying on fish during their travels to spawn locations.

Or I could just be making this more complicated than it really is?

Steve have you ever read about any tagging studies on the St. Croix?

BTW- I sat down to read the Vokoun dissertation last year. Got half way through the first page and decided to go fishing instead.

Hey AquaJoe – Here is a link to Dr. Jason Vokoun’s work on the flathead catfish study. This is from a post BrianK did some time ago. Dr Vokoun’s Flathead Study

It is pretty heavy reading but parts are very interesting.

Don’t feel bad. I’m a scientist and I haven’t made it through the whole thing yet, either

In my opinion, Vokoun should stick to working on his net minding skills in Nashville.

    Gary,
Do you care to list the the link in specific your talking about. I’m just seeing google pages which I have and I’m sure many others here have browsed through before.

He has a lot of work out there.

What I still find amazing it that 4 short years ago, a google search would bring up only a one page MN study and that was it.

Sorry it won’t link to the PDF files it’s the 3rd “pennsyvania coastal zone management” and 5th link “managing missouri catfish” from the top you’ll have to click on those…both are PDF’s.

    Those who haven’t seen it

thanks for picking one out. Don’t mean to jump in your post but I put a link in for you to the one your talking about. I think…..
