Mr. Evan if I may, only assuming you are keeping most those flats with them being in your house and stringer in the other, and with the size to them I would be very cautious of mercury poisoning. The DnR guidelines give you a certain amount recommended, but seeming some of them are larger fish, and much older than your typical fish at those sizes they have had much more time to accumulate the icky stuff that can get you pretty darn sick. Maybe I’m off my data but still use caution.

Nice fish by the way!! Wish we had a bigger population up this way.

Absolutely thanks for the reminder. 20#’s is the absolute biggest I would consider harvesting. Won’t be harvesting a batch like this again this year. Enjoying the cooler water & firmer meat on the fish! I actually have gifted 3 to a buddy to smoke earlier this year. I have only smoked 1 myself but have a batch of 4 to smoke tomorrow.

Caught a 34″ 17# last night, PB of the year. In past years and the upcoming months when the big girls come out I will likely be fishing C&R only. I’m after the state record.. ;)

Forked Whisker. That must happen frequently in the flathead world.

Brian, any reason for the fork?

25#er a few nights ago.. Anyway’s enough spam, stop reading this…. they’re biting!

St Croix flathead caught on Thursday, 23 July at 2305 on a live sunfish. Fish measured out at 35″ X 23″ for 58 KOTC points. River is finally within its banks and conditions are excellent.

    Evan-

I see that you are just a bit down river from me.

What types of areas are you targeting right now? Obviously you are on shore so I’m assuming shallow snags?

I’ve had three strike outs in a row. I fish with a 10′ pole to really pitch it far from shore.. The main channel was producing a lot of fish for about two weeks and now have been skunked! Have you had any luck? Where are they being caught? I’m thinking the muddy water has shutdown the bite?

Try a forum like catgeeks or KOTC.

Lots of fish caught this year…

You want to see a sad flathead photos gallery, look at HSO…Last flathead picture in there is mine from last year…All the cat guys left for greener pastures (i.e. forums without walleye fanatics ) )

We pulled 3 flats out of 40ish feet of water on the St Croix yesterday. Two when I was alone an one by a friend, Pete.

Two under 10 pounds and this one. I didn’t scale it but I feel very safe in saying it’s over 30.

Were you trying for Flats or were you sturgeon fishing and that’s what bit?

I was looking for another sturgeon location. Found a good channel/flat location I guess. )

I was using the Navionics mapping card to look for drops into deep water. I found a pretty step ledge that went from 20ish feet into 80 feet.

I anchored in 30 fow. Best guess was my baits were in 40 to 45 fow.

I should have known that since the water is cooling the flats are moving toward their wintering areas. Any area that breaks the current with some type of drop is a possible wintering area.

I know exactly where you’re at based on your description and though i haven’t fished there much, there are some other very similar areas further north of you where i get flatheads fishing right on the breaks.

Definitely can get a mixed bag of channel cats, flatheads, and sturgeon all by anchoring in one spot this time of year.

My dam hands hurt from pulling anchor so much this weekend, after saturday night i told myself i’m not dropping the anchor again unless i’m in 20FOW or LESS!
    WOrked out pretty well.

I set my camera to a 5 second interval when doing selfies and do get some funny moments on camera… This one Could be labeled my “thank you Jesus” face.

2nd pic is a good scale on a 50+# fishes mouth. Huge.
Keep in mind my hands are enormous and account for most my fish looking small.

My biggest of 2014 season. 44×30. Hopefully see more of these next season as it was a pretty slow year.
