I typically start to target flatys in late june but have been getting the itch earlier and earlier in the past few years. What is the earliest that you guys start fishing for flatheads? what should I look for to trigger the bite in these parts? The other boards I frequent are full of southern boys that don’t realized that flatheads actually shut down over the winter. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t start targeting them until the waters about 60 degrees

The earliest I’ve reliable started catching was when the temp was 65.

Not saying I wasn’t trying prior to that.
Just spent a lot of time in the boat with very little action.

Beats organizing stuff in the driveway!!

Just different tactics are needed for cold water such as dragging stand up jigs, that will *cough* catch them all year long

Snagging flatheads is not really a funny topic. Those of us that respect flatheads don’t see the humor. Hopefully the closed season on flatheads will keep the cold water butthead anglers from snagging flatheads off their wintering beds.

I understand where you’re coming from. I tend to joke about it perhaps more than I should, but in the end even with closed seasons you are still going to get plenty of photos on the web of flats in pics in cold water that bit a jig BC thousands of anglers dragging jigs on a river that’s gonna happen.

Back to flatties, I’m no expert but once opener comes around I’ll be throwing out large live bait immediately. Be it a 10# eye, 15# channel, or hopefully a big old flat just to get a big fish on the other end of the rod I can’t wait! It seems from research that they will be moving around a bit, not as much as later in the year but no one says you can’t catch one

They have to get from the wintering grounds to the spawning grounds some how!

    Good luck!

You can always chase channel cats rather than stooping so low.
