Gonna make a couple trips to the Red river this summer, and wondering how many lines a guy can fish.

Two with a MN license, same as WI border waters.

Which part of the Red? Isn’t Canada one line and barbless hooks?

I was assuming he was talking about border waters since Canada would require a whole new license and set of rules.

So how do border regs work on a river that runs perpendicular across a border?

When you bought your MN license didn’t you pick up a 2014 Minnesota Fishing Regulation booklet?

Reference Page 60, North Dakota – Minnesota Regulations

    – Two lines are permitted, and two hooks are permitted on each line.

Reference Page 61, South Dakota – Minnesota Regulations

-Anglers may use two lines with up to three hooks per line.

Reference Page 54, Canada – Minnesota Border Waters: Anglers who have a Minnesota resident or nonresident license may fish only the Minnesota portion of Canada’s border waters.

You can fish 2 lines no matter which license you have on the US side of the Red with the exception of Drayton (from the north boat ramp to the dam is 1 only) If you are in a boat you need the license from the state you live in if you are from ND or MN if not then one or the other works. If you shore fish you need the license for the state you are physically sitting in.

Should you be talking Canada then you need a Manitoba license and are limited to one line with a barbless hook.

Legally you can fish 3 poles if on the WI side of the river on border waters with a MN license… see BK’s post from the DNR about border water regulations.

It’s nice to see the ND DNR & MN DNR both agree on 2 poles though for border waters.

I wonder how the DNR manages tri/quad state regulations.. or Canada/MN/ND. I’d sure love to see some federal standardization in regions.. Maybe I’m thinking too hard……
