I just got some info back on a tagged lake sturgeon that I caught back in 2008. I always find these interesting, so I thought I’d share.

    Date, Length, Location
    10/1/2008, 20.6″, P4 (initial tagging)
    10/21/2008, 21.0″, P4
    6/14/2010, 21.9″, P4
    4/10/2014, 28.0″, P4

Mine was the 10/21/2008 capture. I was also sent a map of the capture locations. All records of this fish are right under the L&D 3! Must be a favorable location.

Cool! So do they automatically keep you posted on tagged fish you report?

28 sounds like a bit of a stretch even for 4 years(?)

I’m a little surprised abut the ’14 capture. With the rollers open so much of the time over the last 3 years, I would have thought it to be in the upper St Croix by now!

I think so, too. Of course, they rely on the report of the angler, so there can be quite a bit of error.

Really cool, 3 reports in 5.5 years. Makes me wonder how many times that same fish was caught and not reported.

That’s why conservation is so important with sturgeon.
6 years and a lot of walleyes are born and dead. 6 years for sturgeon is nothing.

Just got another update on the same fish!

    4/7/2014, 32.0″, P4

(some people cannot measure a fish for the life of them)

LOL at least they know what pool they’re in.

Question Ralf, do you pinch the tail like the instructions are in the MN DNR’s book?

Maybe it’s the first measurements that were incorrect(?)

PS I really do wish they wouldn’t measure them that way, but when we have a harvest season a person can’t stretch a 59 inch fish to 60 inches.

Being that my number (21.0″) jives with what the DNR measured upon tagging (20.6″) just 20 days earlier, I think my measuring abilities are spot on!

I think it is smart that they update people on the tags. It encourages and is an incentive for taking the time to measure the fish and send in the info.

    Great report and update Ryan!

I have reported many rainy sturgeon but never have received any updates later on. It is interesting seeing the journeys and growth of these fish. 7 days from now, I hope to have more tags to report……

That is right on. Very cool to get updates on the status.
