I know there are many of us that would like to have a fish that size on the end of our lines here on the St Croix or LOTW’s.
Our largest was 65″ and 69 pounds. Pretty much over powered us.
PowerFredPosts: 395February 11, 2014 at 12:19 pm #1387857sturgeon spearing is as much a cultural thing as it is a fishing/hunting thing. People in the Fox Valley take spearing as serious as deer hunting. Wisconsin obviously treats sturgeon differently than Minnesota does. During open water season you can’t even bring them in the boat to unhook and release them, but come February, heck, ram a spear at them! Not sure I understand that logic.
The Wisconsin DNR clearly is doing something right with this population of fish. The Fox River and Wolf River system are the envy of all in regards to sturgeon habitat/rearing. People come from all over the world to see them spawning in April and countless biologists come to study them as well, and given the size of the harvested fish, they’re doing something right.
Personally, I can’t bring myself to kill a fish thats as old as my father, or grandfather for that matter!
February 11, 2014 at 12:40 pm #1387865Could be the most documented Lake Sturgeon in the world.
Kudo’s to the WI DNR!

I feel the same way, but in no way do I fault anyone else for pursuing the time honored tradition.
Hard to appreciate just how big that fish was without seeing it in person, but what a monster!

43# of eggs. Idk what to say, wow.
I’ll say $$$
Saw somewhere that going rate is about $180 per lb. My common core math tells me that’s about an $8000 fish!!
February 11, 2014 at 2:49 pm #1387898I feel the same way about a fish like that too, but the DNR does it right. Once the quota is hit they shut it down.

I agree and am having a hard time equating Native American walleye spearing and sturgeon spearing without considering that both are traditional cultural opportunities… Can’t quite decide whether both should go or stay…

I say both can stay. The key difference is management. The mn DNR had 0 control over the ml harvest.
Where can you find 200#+ sturgeon in an angling only body of water?
timmyPosts: 1960February 11, 2014 at 6:20 pm #1387935In comparison to their well rounded, mature population, the LOTW population is a bunch of teenagers and young adults…… Someday, hopefully, we will have reasonable access to a population of 100+ lb fish up here! Maybe a registration for sturgeon here to stay within a strict harvest cap would be a good idea for us? Winnebago has a tightly regulated harvest of certain numbers of each category(adult/juvenile/male/female) and when a percentage of the quota is reached, they shut it down.
I wonder why MN doesn’t do similarly? Shut down the harvest within x number of hours once a percentage is reached – just like they do with the wolf hunt? Then allow catch/ release thereafter?

February 11, 2014 at 9:27 pm #1387960Couple of quick points. Anyone in WI can spear sturgeon. Catch my drift?
Speaking only of the St Croix there are very few Sturgeon (I’ll add legally) caught/harvested since the minimum length when to 60 inches or over.
I believe the MN DNR Baudette office is doing a great job on watching the harvest of sturgeon on their watch. All harvested fish are reported with the $5 pre purchased tag and they do extensive netting and tagging every year.
If I had my way, there wouldn’t be any harvest on the St Croix and the one over 70 on LOTW’s would be gone as well.
Just seems to me that when a female starts spawning around 50 inches, it would be advantageous to let them spawn for the next 70 years.
…and that folks is why I’m not king.
