PB Sturgeon

Have been out a few times on the Chippewa River looking for ol’ grey whiskers. Caught 3 sturgeon first day out but only in the 20-35 inch range. It can be quit difficult keeping my crawlers away from the ever abundant drum. Speaking of drum, boy do they hit the line hard. Almost lost my pole about 5 times to a drum strike. They bite harder than the sturgeon…Even harder than this guy, my personal best 66 inches!!! What a fun time! Released after a pic or two and she gave me a huge splash of water immediately upon release.

Side note: From my experience this year, if I see sturgeon surfacing and splashing I am able to catch some sturgeon, but…if I see no surface activity in the hole I’ve been fishing the only thing I can catch is drum/sheepshead. Anyone else notice this?

Nice fish. I’ve notced the drum thing here too. I was thinking they were more active with the warmer weather and lower water levels here this year,

Nice fish. I hope you gave her a bath before releasing her.

LOL Trust me I needed one too. It was sure a struggle to try and get it landed, not to mention take a photo, when you are fishing alone! She was full of energy every moment she was on land, even after a 40 minute battle! I guess I did kind of get a bath when what seemed to be a tidal wave hit me in the face upon her release.

Very Cool, I have caught some small sturgeon on the Missy, but need to make a trip sometime to get some monsters. – QB

Caught fishing solo on the shore. Pretty impressive!

Thanks…Didn’t have the biggest girth, but that is just the way most sturgeon run on the Chippewa River. Well it probably took about 20 minutes to get it close to shore, then another 20 trying to get it to come up to the bank just right so I could grab the fish. As for gear I use a 6′ Kodiak fishing rod, which is comparable to a piece of rebar , and an Abu Ambassadeur 5000 loaded with 50 lb suffix braid. Rod/reel are kind of vintage/antique, as they were my grandpas, but just got the reel tuned up and it purrs.
It’s always a special moment when I can catch fish essentially on the same gear that my grandpa did back in the 60’s.
