Why are we fishing in the Dark?

Today was one of those once in a lifetime kind of deals. My plan was to be on the river by 0700 and fish until about 1130. I was going to work the area that Dave and I hit last Friday with some success. I figured I’d come off the water about noon with a couple of fish and some ideas on where to chase flatheads until the KOTC ends on 30 September. I had hooks in the water at 0745 and a nice channel in the boat at 0810. After that it was fish on almost steady until 1100. I finished the morning with 8 nice channel cats and my trolling technique down pat. I was back on fish and have a pretty good idea on how to catch them.

I went home and ate lunch with my wife and was planning to hang around the house for the rest of the day. The weather stayed overcast with a nice breeze and conditions were perfect for fishing. My bride could tell I wanted to be on the water and she told me to take off. I was packed and out of the house by 1530 heading for the river.

So round 2 started with hooks in at 1625 and again I had a nice 28″ channel cat in the boat within minutes at 1640. I got him in and out within minutes and sat back down and immediately both rods doubled over. I grabbed one in my left hand and one in my right hand and was trying to figure out which one was the biggest so I could deal with him first. They were both hooked good so I put the right rod back in the holder and with my left hand rod I managed to drag a nice fat 37″ X 23″ flathead into the boat. I dumped him out of the net, flopping and banging around on the aft deck and he managed to slime just about everything he touched. I proceeded to drag another nice flathead into the boat and dropped him next to his buddy. The second one measured out at 36″ X 22″ and I had my first flathead double. SWEET! And I wasn’t even done for the day – I managed 4 more channel cats before calling it quits at 1905. What a Day! 13 channel cats and 2 flatheads. This cured a long dry spell starting in the middle of August.

I’m not chasing sturgeon as long as this cat bite holds up. I got a feeling that the St Croix cats are still hungry and catchable. I’m after them now.

Glad to hear of your success. I read in the other thread what rig you use…good choice. I use that rig all summer long in the Reservoirs around Iowa with great success. Glad to see someone else posting their success stories as well.

To answer your question…it has been my experience that you can use that rig all summer (maybe all year) with success…and right during the middle of the day. I took a local Sports Caster from our local news channel out for a story. We arrived at the dock at 11AM and finished at 1:30PM. Caught 12-14 nice cats for the story during that time. That was the beginning of August. He was impressed.

So, I believe you can sleep soundly at night and save you fishing strength for the daylight hours. You will pick up the stray Flathead, but the Channel Cats won’t leave you alone.

Too bad you can’t use shad…that’s by far the best bait I have found for this style fishing and shad are everywhere. I guess you have to do what you have to do.

Good luck. I think you better set a date for a Sturgeon trip because I doubt you’re going to run out of Channel Cat Action.

    Thanks for the report…Ken

    Nice report Steve.

We all know why BK fishes in the dark.

Probably more so, what with the heightened sense of smell..

Steve, do you find most of your channels coming out of deeper water?

Maybe I should ask this, have you tried shallow water, say 10 feet?

Hi Brian – All I’m doing is looking for shad and then trolling in and around the shad pods. The cats are following the shad. I think the shallowest I’ve been is about 20′. The shad seem to be at that first break into deeper water. I’m finding lots and lots of shad.

I wish! Kind of sad we cannot harvest shad – the St Croix is full of them – a simple cast net toss away.

But we might accidentally net a walleye which are known to die instantly of cast net asphyxiation.

So if I cruise up thata way, locking through a few gates, using my Iowa license, suppose I could catch some of those shad? It’s legal here, you just have to kill them immediately…and you can use them for bait too. And I gotta say, they are the best cut bait for channel cats in this world.

I guess your Subject Line is two fold…”Fishing in the Dark” as in ‘can’t utilize the abundent bait resource right in front of you’.

So are you guys allowed to catch your own bait at all…chubs and sucker and such? Or are you doomed to purchase everything you can use from a dealer/retailer?

Ken – we can now harvest bait from infested water if it is to be used in that body of water.

As in I can catch a sucker on the Mississippi (in MN) and use it to catch cats.

Ken, by my count you would only be breaking three laws…but it was a quick count.

Here’s Steve explaining the hook and line bait issues as they were in 2012.

He gets a little wound out, but was very effective and in the end the law was changed.

BTW, he was invited back the following year.

That’s awesome. So glad these were implemented.
