Cold Front Cats

With the recent high heat and pressure thread, thought I would bring up the opposite, cold front. Got out tonight for a bit in the boat, with an old bud of mine I haven’t seen in a while and was hoping to get him on some fish. Some hours and one sheephead later we called it quits. If anyone has any tips on days like this and where to find the kitties after a cool front comes in would be much appreciated. Tried leeches, crawlers, stinkbait, dead shiners, cut sheephead, and even live creek chubs. Different rigs to switch it up as well, clear flouro leader, green mono, clear mono, circle hooks, trebles, octopus circles, different beads, light, dark you name it, not one good bite, or even nibble for that matter. I thought river fish were a little more resilient when it came to weather patterns but ??. Tried 5′ flats on outside deep bends, the drop into those bends, some lips of flats on the non current side around 7-10′, side channel entrances with gravel and wood cover that went from 10 into 20′, straight wood cover off the main channel off 14-17′, not a thing to show. Maybe just one of those days where nothing works.

Well that front didn’t last long. Although I think my regular fishing partner here is just a better fisherman.
Gave her quite the fight can’t believe she reeled it all the way, very cool. Cut creek chub in middle of the river section off a rocky point in 7′ that goes into the main channel of about 11-12′.

That fish is as big as she is. Congratulations on getting her a nice fish. I bet she will remember that fight for a long time.

Next purchase is going to be those cool looking team catfish holders. Although it makes for some good pics with dad holding it out a foot in front of camera, and I’m tired of my thumb getting chewed on the whole time.

With cold fronts sometimes on old man river the noon hour is the time to get them. I think they don’t really eat all that much but if you can get a feeding window you might get a few flurries.

Catfish are more sensitive to fronts and water temperature than most people can fathom. They can detect fronts and water tempt drops to as little as one degree.

How to deal with fronts and falling water temperature is fairly simple. In rivers get off the current. Go to areas where there this little or no current preferably that is near faster deeper water. Also be willing to sit a little longer as the fish tend to not hunt but rather sit tight. The scent of the bait must do the work to entice them to take it.

I haven’t cracked my book yet. I plan too once the Holiday season passes and/or we get closer to spring. Just glossing over it, I like that it is more detailed than just saying where to fish during certain times of the year. I like stats and studies.

Amazing how some guides do that, eh?

Just kidding BK! Pretty cool that we get another guru to give us some ideas. I will be interested to see what Brad has to offer about tactics on the Red, since most of us fish the lower half of the state.

While I did my pattern research on the Red I did the major part of the research on catfish and rivers. I wrote the book with the notion that a channel cat is a channel cat and a river is a river.
