Pool 10 Sturgeon

I was pulling cranks for walleyes on Pool 10 last week when I tied into this one. Jointed shad rap snagged in the front of the tail and the battle ensued. Up and down the slough – I was fishing alone and finally managed to get the head into the net and hoisted it over the side of the boat.
I did not get a tape on it – took a couple of quick pictures and slide it back into the creek.

Come to think of it, I didn’t think Lakers were that far South!

Doesn’t happen too often Jeff, but when it does I drink whatever kind of beer that is.

Interesting. I was under the assumption they were a fish of the North.

Pretty much what I was going to say. All of it is amazing, but I think the fact you landed it with it being snagged in the tail the most amazing part.

Beautiful sturgeon! She looks like a fat and healthy Rainy River sturgeon.

I’ve caught a couple on Pool 11 and seen them on 12. Have to be careful, I thought it was illegal to even remove them from the water. Maybe that’s just an Iowa rule.

How can you not take her out of the water and give her a hug?

From what I saw online, you’ll have to go hit the Missouri river for one.

    Cool whiskers on the pallid.

Its good to know too. I assumed MN only had shovelnose and lakers. If I caught one of these rarities, I probably would have assumed it was a mutant laker. Now we know if we catch one, we probably want to contact the DNR.

I was at a WI County meeting a few years back. They were talking about people confusing a pallid for the shovelnose.

This was a big concern because of it’s endangered status.

They also added that WI was pretty much out of the pallid’s range.

Impressive catch, hmm.. what would I do in a situation like that? I would jump in the water, bear hug that fish and push it on shore..whew
