    Nice fish!

My nephew emailed me asking, “I noticed on ido that the flats havnet done much all year. Have they been getting any better?”. It seems like they have been, but boy has it been tough with the cold early start and high water this year or what? Anyone who has boated one or more over 30# this has to count themselves fortunate!

I still remember the camp out a few years ago when we landed 4-6 turtles. Scary. All were released unharmed.

Don’t you guys eat snapping turtles? Or is that a protected species in Minnesota…kinda like the shad? I know Wisconsin has some rediculous season on them but I didn’t know they were so cherrished in Minnesota. I guess these Iowa laws might not be as bad as I thought.

Snappers are great table fare. I don’t catch many but when I do, they end up on my supper table.

Good luck with the flatties. It has been a weird year for sure. Water temp dropped about 12*-15* in the last two weeks (from 89* to 77*).. That’s gotta throw a curve ball to those fish.

People do eat them, but I don’t think it is really that common. I think if you are camped out on the river fishing and not planning on taking a turtle home, you really aren’t set up to harvest one.

Yeah, I just couldn’t resist that one.

Prepared or not, they will live forever inthe back of a truck. I’d never throw one back…unless it was too small. Once you’ve tried one, you will think twice about not keeping them. But that’s your choice and I respect that.

    To clarify, we caught softshells.

I’ve heard that snapper is good. I’d love to try it some time. I love frog legs.

I probably harvest 20-30 fish yearly. That tells you how much I would desire harvesting a turtle.

Best thing to do with turtles is to bring them home alive. Put them in a tank with water part way up their shell. Change water every day for 3 days. Then enjoy some turtle soup.

Just received a little more info…

It was caught in 3-10 fow on a bullhead using a Team Catfish 9/0 hook. Water temp was about 74 degrees fishing a log jam up stream of Everts Resort.

The turtle was caught on a piece of cut sucker. Editors note:duh!

The Black river would be a good place to start…
Plenty of access on airport road…the spillway can be good too.
The areas around the boat landings by Copeland park can be good also..
    Ask around…

Let me know what end of town your looking to fish.
