60 lb St Croix Flathead

I got a big King of the Cats Flathead upgrade tonight. This is a new personal best for me. He hit a bullhead at 2245 and I thought he was going to drag me right out the back of the boat. The only bite of the night but it was all I needed.

He measured out at 46″ X 31″. I hung him on my Cabela’s Spring Scale and he pulled it down to an even 60 pounds. I’m not sure how accurate that scale is but I’m claiming my senior citizen Exaggerated Fish Claim Privilege and calling it a 60# fish. I can tell you this – I think I reinjured my hernia surgery trying to hold that fish up for photos. That is the heaviest fish I have ever caught. That should bump me up right behind Jake R on the KOTC Flathead Leaderboard – at least I am now in the 200 Club with Jake. I plan on getting another one tomorrow night.

I’m fired up now. Time to chase flatheads. St Croix is almost at its normal stable summertime pool elevation of 675.5′ – tonight it was 676.7′ and the river is within its banks and in good shape. Flow is low to moderate and the water is clear. It looks like the channels and flatheads are post spawn and we should see a pretty good bite now.

    Congrats STEVE!!

You’ve put in your dues over the years and it’s great to see a fish that size again!!

When push comes to shove, a scale and the pound reading always win out!!

    Totally awesome fish!

Wow, you’re tearing them up this year!!! Can’t wait til I retire to do that stuff every night too.

Are you fishing the same hole or short stretch of the St Croix or are you everywhere on the river. Just curious (don’t worry about me, I’m not driving upo there to steal your spots or going to set a bunch of bank lines in you spot).

Thanks for all the reports and pic’s…it’s inspiring.

I’ve been at this a long time and I have a pretty good string of spots to fish where I have caught fish before. If I’ve caught a fish in a spot before I know it holds the bait that they are looking for. I don’t have any trouble with spots to fish. It is a big river and the fish are most everywhere.

The King of the Cats is a free fishing contest most of us old cat guys participate in. Go to “King of the Cats.org” and you can see the leaderboards for channel cats, flatheads and sturgeon. It is a fun way to keep track of the cat bite and who is catching fish and where.

You accumulate points by adding the length and girth of your fish and submitting them in the on-line submission form. The contest runs from April to October and they keep a tally of your top 3 submissions. It is pretty simple and easy for the contestants and is a lot of fun.

It adds a little fun competition during the catfish season. There are some pretty good fishermen participating and they will share info and the running banter on the fishing websites is kind of interesting.

Way to go steve. My kids wanted to know where you caught it and I told them just down river from where we swim.
