You gotta love the National Park Service

The National Park Service put out their floating portapotties on the St Croix. It sure is nice of them to take care of us catfishermen. When a guy has to do his duty late at night you can always find the comforts of home courtesy of the NPS. Your tax dollars at work – I get my moneys worth.

Is there a sign about the bad zebra mussels attached?

    Good time for reading material.

I am sure they remove the plugs when taking them out of the water.

Those could come in handy. Where abouts are they located?

Unless you are catfishing with a woman at night in your boat, who needs that? Come to think of it, if you are in a boat at night with a woman, why are you catfishing?

I might need to dispose of a load of stink bait.

Might get interesting when a cruiser goes by and leaves a 4′ wake.

There are 4 sets of them north of the Boomsite DNR launch. 2 sets are on Mile Long Island across from the Boomsite Wayside Rest and one is in West Island Narrows No Wake Zone and another one is located in the main channel near the bridge abuttments south of the High Bridge.

The one in West Island Narrows has a handicapped accessible lift. They sit pretty high off the water. The others have access ramps. The islands are under water right now but once the high water recedes they work out pretty good for campers and day users on the islands.

They clean and empty them every week. They get used I guarantee you.

Help me out Steve, there was a reason they put those in.

If I recall, it’s because the islands are made of sand and with all the camping traffic, folks were digging holes to deposit their waste.

This wasn’t helping the river when it floods the islands and that happens frequently, but also people were digging holes and running into other folks left overs…so to speak.

At least that’s how I remember the conversation.

I guess I never even thought about the pooping. In that respect with all the camping it isn’t a horrible idea.

And if you ever run out of stink bait while on the river…

    Sorry, that’s terrible.

Brian – The St Croix River is a National Park managed by the National Park Service. Part of their park management plan is to control human waste at the camping and day use sites. Up river from the High Bridge all campers and day users are required to collect all their own waste using their own portable waste containers.
The high usage from the high bridge on down has caused the NPS to put public use portable toilets in place to help control human waste. The St Croix is a high use area – this is a prudent step to control the waste generated in my opinion.
