The Nephew’s got a nice one there Pug

Doesn’t the guide get credit? Oh wait. That might have been the spot he chose after we got into it over figuring out where to park.

I am definitely a backseat boater. I am very particular about finding a spot on the graph and setting up perfectly to fish it. He just would rather choose a random spot.

Went out last wknd. when the weather was nice and in the high 70’s. Caught about 5 sturgeons all on the green night crawlers, tried shad and stink bait but they weren’t biting that.
In the picture I’m holding it wrong, I noticed it took one sturgeon a little longer to revive and swim off. So I read up on it when I got home how it’s to be held, NOT BY THE GILLS

It doesn’t look like you are holding it with your fingers under the gill plate, which isn’t so bad. Its when you get your fingers under the gill plate when it is bad. I still wouldn’t hold it by the head like that.

Glad you took the time to find out how to properly hold them and will be employing it from now on.

    Nice fish!

Also, not nearly as big of an issue with smaller shovelnose sturgeon. It’s heavier fish that really put stress on the gill plates when held incorrectly.

Still, all it takes is a little nick of a gill and it will be enough to make them bleed out.

As much research as you do that damaging the gill plates hurts them.

mmorgen, nice catch and you were by yourself? I don’t want to think what would’ve happened if I were by myself with a monster like that. A baby one already slaps me silly on the river banks.

What were the measurements of that beast Jakob? You sure you aren’t re-purposing a photo from LOW/Rainy this spring?

I’m thinking you need to make that a separate, new post.
