So the long winter has gotten to me and I’ve been going through all my reels and tuning them up for the coming open water. Another thread here on IDO got me to thinking. I’ve heard many complaints about the weak clicker on the standard Abu 6500. This sparked an idea, why not beef up the springs? Well my Dad is a bit of a tinkerer and pack rat so I stopped by this afternoon to see if he had any springs that might work. Sure enough, I found some I though would work. I got home and pulled my old 6500 apart and swapped the springs. The loops in the end of the spring were a bit big so I pinched them tight with a needle nose pliers. When I put it back together, the clicker is now close to the tension of an Abu 7000. Imagine these stronger springs may wear the plastic teeth that the metal clicker strikes a bit faster, but this is a late 80s 6500c3 so I’m not too worried. Now I just need to order new drag washers and I’ll be set to start chucking those fat 9″ bullies. Oh just a warning this modification WILL NOT work on the BCX line. This will only work with an older style metal clicker.
