Well, I went the economical route and got an Ugly Stik Tiger Lite 7′ one piece Heavy action. I was pleasantly surprised by the lightweight feel of the rod. It’s got a stiffer tip than the regular tigers and takes a good amount of weight to load it up. It’s paired with an Ambassadeur 6500. I figure this is a good starter setup. I’ve got another 6500 and a Penn 310 that still need rods though. I’d like to stay on budget. Anybody have any info on the orange MeatHunters or the Nightstick rods?

If you aren’t looking to buy another 85-100 dollar bait caster, the Okumas are a good bargain choice. You can get the ones equivalent to a Abu 7000 on Amazon for 45 bucks shipped. Some other guys on the site have them and say they are a good bargain. I just got mine this winter, so I can’t give first hand experience.

So if you are on a budget (aren’t we all?) maybe go with another Ugly or Nightstick and one of the Okumas?

Like BK said, as long as you get out there!

    Good advice!

PS my budget is when my FW say STOP! That’s when I have to start hiding purchases.

Among my other baitcasters, I have an okuma classic clx300l. Not a bad deal for like 35 shipped. Handled sturgeon this fall with no issues.

To clarify, the one I bought was the XP-302L. Semms solid and the clicker is loud.

Ha! I stopped at my Dad’s house this afternoon and he had a few springs that did just the trick. If you are comfortable taking apart the clicker on an abu 6500 and upgrading the springs is pretty easy. I’d bet Fleet Farm or a good hardware store might have some springs that would work. Just make sure you get ones that are the same length. I’ll take some pictures and post them. My 6500 has a clicker roughly as strong as a 7000.

Hey Mr. Crow-ly, just saying Crow sounds better to me then Mr., but anyway you want me to say your name I will, but Crow has a certain ring to it thats palatable to some of us outdoors guys. Do you have a sinker mold yet in the ounce to 2 oz. size up yet? its something your going to need, pre formed lead can get pretty expensive, such as in sinkers.
